Is There Ever a Time to Hunt with Magnum Calibers?

Great example, and I completely agree with the need for a versatile setup that can handle everything from 20 to 800 yards. From my experience, smaller, frangible bullets can shine in exactly this scenario, offering flexibility that some heavier "long-range" bullets might lack. For instance, I...

Is There Ever a Time to Hunt with Magnum Calibers?

Better how? It appears that small match bullets are a replacement for big tough bullets - isn't that a replacement for displacement? When/where does the big bullet actually make the difference. It seems like perhaps at ranges that are beyond what we should hunt at anyway?

Is There Ever a Time to Hunt with Magnum Calibers?

Great point! You're totally right, this is why I have often recommend a 308 for the more casual hunter, 300m and in, factory ammo. If I couldn't reload and didn't like nerding out on the science and ballistics I think you're absolutely correct.

Sure - let me give it a try...

Is There Ever a Time to Hunt with Magnum Calibers?

Apologies if it came across that 10 inches can be ignored (it definitely matters). It was more a case of at that distance the skills required might mitigate some of the advantage and with so many other factors coming into play is what you gain more than what you lose in the recoil? Your point...

Is There Ever a Time to Hunt with Magnum Calibers?

In your scenario the 180 at 3000 hits 1800fps at 845M and would need 41.8" with a 10mph FV. The 88 eldm is 1800 at 777M and would need 42.4". But, lets say there was someone else's BOAL that needed leg shooting, so you stretched the 88 beyond it's velocity range to 845M it's now 51.7". Of...

Is There Ever a Time to Hunt with Magnum Calibers?

I like your thinking on this one and I think it makes sense. We know that a fragmenting 30cal will create a larger permanent wound channel than an 22cal. Ergo a grizzly bear is attacking me from inside 100 and that big 225 is going to do absurd damage with one shot. The 88eldm will be less...

Is There Ever a Time to Hunt with Magnum Calibers?

Agreed - the 6UM is a great example (so is a 240WBY). But, wouldn't a 22UM be the ultimate? My question was about the bigger bullets being pushed fast and where they start to be an advantage (or if they ever do). It sounds like maybe it's ELR, possibly outside of hunting ranges and dangerous...

Is There Ever a Time to Hunt with Magnum Calibers?

Great question! That’s why I said magnum calibre, somewhat tongue in cheek. I’m asking heavy for calibre small cartridge vs the same in a large cartridge. An 88 ELDM vs a 225 ELDM (22CM vs 300PRC) as an example (I shoot both). To your point; I killed a deer with a 77TMK in a 223 and it...

Is There Ever a Time to Hunt with Magnum Calibers?

You raise a fair point about large calibers for dangerous game, but it makes me question whether a .223 really wouldn’t work on something like a grizzly (no idea on African dangerous game). There’s documented evidence of small calibers killing grizzlies, and with the right bullet—a...

Is There Ever a Time to Hunt with Magnum Calibers?

Fair point—this definitely feels like ground we’ve covered in other threads! I think I’ve read through almost all of them, and they do tend to break into two camps: 1. Small caliber advocates: Backed by 500 pages of evidence, ballistic charts, and personal success stories with...

Is There Ever a Time to Hunt with Magnum Calibers?

Fair point - but you’re not pushing a 195 at the same speed as a 175 and when I run the velocity adjusted numbers the windage correction at 1000 is negligible. For shooting ELR steel sure, but for hunting?

Is There Ever a Time to Hunt with Magnum Calibers?

Great points, and I appreciate your perspective on wanting everything in your favour when hunting dangerous game—totally valid, especially if life’s on the line. I’ve had some experiences that align with your thoughts but also challenge them in specific situations, particularly with the concept...

Is There Ever a Time to Hunt with Magnum Calibers?

Same experience with my WSM- although two of the critters I shot with the 22CM were DRT. One at 70m one at 500m. Another at 100M ran less than 100m before piling up.

Is There Ever a Time to Hunt with Magnum Calibers?

Thanks for the thoughtful responses, everyone! I want to clarify my original question and add some context from my experience. First off, I’m not here to argue against magnums—I own and shoot several, and I enjoy hunting with them. In 2023, I took a mule deer at 600m with my .300 WSM, and...

Is There Ever a Time to Hunt with Magnum Calibers?

That’s where I’m at too. I’ve got a couple of magnums and I’m trying to figure out if they still have a valid hunting role in my lineup. For shooting steel at extreme long ranges—splash alone can justify their place. It’s hard to beat the visibility of impact with a magnum, especially on steel...

Is There Ever a Time to Hunt with Magnum Calibers?

That’s a solid point, and it’s something I’ve thought about a lot in my own experience. For example, I run a .300 WSM shooting 212 ELD-X bullets, and it holds 1800 fps out to 721 meters (sorry, Canadian here!). In a 10 mph full-value wind, that setup requires a 1.2 Mil hold. On the other hand...

Is There Ever a Time to Hunt with Magnum Calibers?

Hey Rokslide, I’ve been reading through the epic 500+ page thread on hunting large game with .224 caliber bullets, and I have to admit, it got me questioning everything I thought I knew about hunting calibers. You all have demonstrated time and again that with proper bullet construction (77...

Q&A for Leupold Mark 5 Field Evals

In the drop tests I noticed both of the scopes were non-illuminated. Speaking to Leupold they advised that the steep additional cost for the illumination was in part because it had to meet a much higher standard of testing. Not really sure what that means, but has anyone else heard that?
