    In a pinch don't forget that any dog (not even a trained tracker) has a better sniffer than any human. And they love smells. ALL the smells. Sure it might take a bit of time, but even with a labradoodle or mutt I'd say you're more likely to find a trail than just trying to use your own...

    FNG From Wyoming

    Just got that Christiansen FFT in a 6.5 PRC with an intent to use it for a cow elk hunt next year. How do you like it in the 300WM? I'm a Gillette visitor mainly but have been down through Riverton a few times on the way to ID.

    Any chance for this elk?

    Also with the waiting, find where there is standing water nearby. Gut-shot elk may go a ways to find a water source since they feel more “sick” than “dying”. Ponds, lakes, etc are worth mapping in your grid search as a first stop.

    Wyoming Elk Rifle season

    Well, by being close to Colorado I think it is safe to assume that you're going to have plenty of people. Archery season where we hunt you'll come across maybe 2-3 folks across 5 square miles. Same area in rifle and it is 10x that for number of hunters.
