Seriously. Worse yet, the locking mechanism for the blades on mine broke 10min into skinning.
Great hunt write up. I had a similar Backcountry wilderness experience this year during muzzleloader.
Same thought scenario here. They're there. I know they'll be there, but going in solo into country where vehicles can't go and killing something so far in that I can't pack out in a reasonable timeframe just isn't ethical. Us solo hunters have to find the remote areas within reasonable truck...
Did a 10mile hike out scouting today. Snuck up on two different pairs of bulls having a duel in the trees. That was fun. Too bad I didn't draw a bow hunt!
0/1 first year elk, or any notable hunting ever. Going for 1/2 elk this year in the same unit. A lot of lessons learned. Solo DiY wilderness public draw.
Roxy's Law was the reason we banned traps. My dogs are my children, so please respect my traditions and cultures, and I'll try to understand and respect yours
Roxy, a senior dog, was hiking with her guardians when she was trapped near a trail at Santa Cruz Lake in Northern New Mexico. Her...
I keep my "mutts" on Garmin GPS collars and within eye-sight. They're responsive to verbal recall, but can also be recalled by shock/vibration if prey drive takes over.
You folks really have turned these discussions in to something that's almost like tribal/partisan "us vs them," which is a...
As a hunter and also an avid hiker in the backcountry with my dogs, I supported the ban of traps on public lands (key word: public). We can have nuance right, and not accuse everyone with different views of being an anti-hunter, right?
I'm also not a fan of using hounds for hunting, but I...
Without recording all useful information on to these public interwebs (since we can't private message). Look at taking FR91 up to its end. Those, along with any ATV roads are going to be popular come hunt time, but it's a rough one. If the weather doesn't change to bring in wallows and sources...
I would happily trade your tag for my muzzle, but alas 😁. OK, I ask that because I'm thinking of areas that might work for you guys. It sounds like the wilderness is not it (a lot of hiking at elevation up and down in the better areas from your camp site). Are you doing the full 14 days, and are...
What's your fitness level? Are you planning to pack into the area, or day hike from a base camp (tenting?). Does the wife have hunting experience to do be the caller? I'm in a similar experience boat, but I wouldn't risk tagging along people who might bust your hunt unless you're just in it...
That's some pretty hard stereotyping... As a resident, but non-native New Mexican I can see it. A big ATV/Truck hunting culture out here. Which is fantastic for those of seeking backpacking or deep gnarly day hikes.
But also to be fair, Texans are even worse when it comes to lazy entitled...
Hah, funny. I'm new as well and can't PM you. Edited (deleted) my original comment as I couldn't edit it, and instead reposted it with corrections. I just came back from (edit: your unit) and might be able to share some Intel depending on what area you have targeted.
I can tell you that it's a...
Post the unit and some of us might be able to offer advice. Without knowing the month/location, you'll just receive general info you can get from googling "how to find elk in "x" month. I'm guessing the Sept 1-14 hunt? I just came back from scouting some northern units and might be able to offer...
Hey ndbuck09, mind if I pick your brain about a spot I hunted last year, and am debating trying at again this year? Unfortunately since I've finally signed up on this website but am still new, I can't send a PM. I'm not sure if it's the other way around. Thanks.
As a new elk hunter as of last season, I thought I could cardio my way to success, but having tried exactly that, I found it true that the elk don't care. I feel personally attacked now. This is a great thread and also describes the area I plan to hunt again from top->down camp.
