It’s something my grandfather and father did for a lot of years between living in AK, ID and NM. My dad INSISTS it’s the way to go. Letting the old man in his 70’s have his way on a few things hasn’t hurt me any.
It’s all good! The “dirt” is black pepper. I put it on the outside of the carcass to keep the birds off while I continued hunting with my son. The skinning job is legitimately terrible partially from doing the work in the dark, partially because my 12yo son helped and it was his first go.
Only about 100 yard shot as I found this guy bedded just the other side of a hill I’d climbed. 6GT/110 a-tip. He made it a couple steps before piling up.
I always shoot vitals. Lowest impact velocity to date is 2200fps @535 yards on a large bodied 3x3 mulie. I caught about 20 grains of lead on the offside hide and his lungs were soup.
I’ve got a GAP built 6GT that I hunt with that is setup with Hawkins hunter bottom metal and I have used both Hawkins flush fit mags as well as standard 5-round AICS mags with zero feeding issues.

One thing I haven’t seen anyone else do and it’s too late for your situation unless you get it broken free is to coat the threads of the brake with anti seize before using the can. Plenty of hi temp anti seize compounds that will withstand 2,000-2,500 degrees. I’ve always done this primarily...
I didn’t. I’m pretty hesitant to push it much harder though as I’m sitting at 7.4lbs with the nxs 2.5-10 and TBAC ultra 5. It’s a bit rough on the shoulder with the super thin recoil pad
Interesting results. I’m running 4831sc in my 18” and it shoots 175’s @2830 with room for more speed if I wanted it. I need to try some 180’s one of these days.
As far as I am aware George Gardner who works very closely with Hornady cooked these up as a cheaper alternative to the 110 a-tips specifically to run in the 6GT factory ammunition.
I do purchase mine directly from GAP but Midway had them listed for a short period.
They are nearly...
