    WTS Leupold VX-Freedom 4-12 x 40 Creedmoor

My heart has gone south on me and my hunting days are over. Just starting in on selling everything off - stay tuned if interested in .338 Win Mag reloading equipment, as I gather it together. For now, a Leupold VX-Freedom 4-12 x 40 mm, with Creedmoor Reticle. It saw no field use - only...

1st timer out west, older: diy v. cost/benefit of guided

Hey Maverick, thanks for posting. I've been on a long slow recovery from a blown knee, haven't been on here for awhile, just starting to get back to training after a tough early winter. These old bones are feeling it, esp. at -11 raw temps. So none yet. Hope all of you guys are enjoying a...

    Northern Wisconsin Big Woods...

I'm in the U.P. now, for Christmas. My wife's side are all longtime U.P. hunters, so looking forward to talking to them. Next year I plan to perhaps split the time before and after, into ML, between the Chequamegon and the Sylvania Wilderness.

Well, I guess it depends on what you mean by worth it - certainly not to bag a deer, not at least this last season. I don't think anyone we saw or met moved as hard as we did and we saw basically nothing. But I learned some new country, and my son learned some new skills, so in my opinion it's...

One Gun with different bullets, one gun w/ one bullet for Elk / Deer / Black bears? Or two different guns (cartridges)?

Two different rifles, two different terrains and distances - Marlin 45-70 guide gun, Ruger M77 Hawkeye .338 WM.

    Northern Wisconsin Big Woods...

Been recovering from a blown knee, and man, you know, at 62, you know exactly when you did it and you don't bounce back so easily. Guess I'm not 20 anymore but it was still pretty rewarding to have my son say "man, my old man is kicking my ass!". Never regret hunting up north but it was...

    Couldn't agree more. Idiocy.

    Ashland/Bayfield, Northwoods WI - bust

My wife's family are all Yoopers - my son has his great-grandpa's 1904 38-55, and his grandad's 336. Gwinn, multi-generation. In fact they're coming today for thanksgiving. I'd actually given a thought to heading up to the Sylvania, but it seems we're all in the same boat. Really sorry to...

    Ashland/Bayfield, Northwoods WI - bust

Wasn't aware of the length into April. Pretty sad. When we drove in to Clam Lake pretty heartening to see "Caution Elk Crossing" signs in WI. Have there been reportings of elk up your way? Our thoughts as well, on El Niño. Fingers crossed. Have a good winter and rest of your year.

    Ashland/Bayfield, Northwoods WI - bust

Well, tough year. Close to 25 miles of hard stillhunting over 4 days, and we called it. Saw more corn than deer sign. In a semi-primitive area, heard two ATV's. Buck sign a grand total of one good rub and 3 very small rubs low. Nothing extraordinary on wolf scat. Mid 40's temps, corn flake...

School me on .338 win mag reloading

Ah, gotcha. I'm stumped on the velocity exceeding the stated book, to be honest. I can't answer for you and the usual caveats (at your own risk, etc.) apply, but if it were me, I'd feel comfortable going to Speers's own stated values. In fact, I do go to max (and compressed) on many loads...

School me on .338 win mag reloading

I think your goal to get consistent results is at odds with using odd brass, etc., so totally honest not quite sure where you're heading at this point. Just a note, but for annealing I use a propane torch, hold my cases by the bottom, rotate in my fingers in the "middle" flame until they get...

School me on .338 win mag reloading

Again, I'm not a guy to opine on the shoulder bumping process. I only learned it to preserve my bottleneck case life, most especially, like you, for my .338. I merely followed step-by-step having gotten some help, so can't give you a lot there and will definitely deign to others. This was one...

School me on .338 win mag reloading

Be careful - IMR 4831 and Hogdon 4831 are two completely different powders. IMR 4831 is faster than H 4831. I 4831 is fine, but it doesn't have the weather-tolerance that the Hogdon line - the "Extreme" line - is supposed to have. The added performance is merely anecdotal for me. I'd say, go...

School me on .338 win mag reloading

My only thought would be that if you're looking for cold weather tolerance, you might consider Hogdon 4831or 4831-SC. These are designed to be cold- and hot-weather tolerant. I use 4831-SC for my 225-250 gr .338 WM, to really good effect; I abandoned 200 grain bullets but H 4350 works well...

    Reloading 2.0 Guidance Requested

That's good to know. Sorry I have no helpful advice as my only concern is an ethical kill out to my hunting limits, very different beast from what you're after. Good luck.

    Reloading 2.0 Guidance Requested

OP, one thing I don't think I've seen (sorry if I missed it), is whether you're looking for "target" precision, or "field" precision. I ask only because I spent years, and countless components, chasing a level of precision that has zero to do with my personal hunting need, which is my only...

I missed it until now. Having treated plenty of Marines who gave of themselves selflessly, I, too, find this post reprehensible.
