He was on top of the closed lid. The grabit's bottom was attached to the front of the pack, with the upper straps attached to my shoulder straps so it acted like a backrest.
Hunting/day pack: Kifaru Stryker XL, with an assortment of pockets and accessories depending on specific needs. Went through a lot of packs before settling on this one, it does almost everything and I love it.
Backpacking with 2 young kids: Kifaru Fulcrum, stuffed to the gills with snacks...
I used a grab-it as a makeshift backrest for my son when he was about 3 to keep him on top of an X-ray. It worked remarkably well, wish I'd gotten a picture.
