I’m late to this thread but I’ve used both the eld-x and amax in my 308. In my experience the eld-x has performed much better in killing game between 50-400 yards. The amax does the job but they usually end up running a little and the eld-x just seems to drop elk and deer
I’m just concerned about that small of a bullet. But a 270 isn’t much bigger diameter and both the 270 and 7mm-08 use the same weight bullets as the 6.5. You’re definitely on to something but I don’t know if I trust 6.5s. 6.5 prc has more juice than the creedmoor but it’s almost ballistically...
270 has 8” less drop, and has about 100 more fps and foot lbs of energy at 600 yards. 30-06 has 2” more drop and the same velocity with 200lbs more energy than the 7mm-08. .308 drops 12” more and is going 200 fps slower but has the same energy as the 7mm-08. At 600 yards the 7mm-08 had 1350 ft...
I was just about to bring up the 280 ai. A 7 mag needs a longer barrel meaning more weight and it’s easier to get caught up. Cutting it down to 22” would provide the same or worse ballistics as a 280 ai with more powder. The 280 just seems like the perfect cartridge IMO. I’d like to keep the...
I’m against muzzle brakes because of how loud they are and sometimes I just don’t have time to put in ear protection. And I’m against suppressors because of how much length and weight they add and how expensive they are. That being said I’ve seen ported barrels. I know they take away recoil but...
Its an option. I’ve never shot a 30-06 or 7rm so I don’t know how they compare. Ballistically the 7 mag beats everything. Ammo is a little more pricey but it’s not a problem. I though because it was a magnum it’s recoil would be pretty bad.
I was using the cds and it worked perfect. It was a 8” circle and I was hitting it most of the time (wind picked up a little sometimes and I’m sure a couple of the shots were my fault but also the trigger has a lot of creep in it) by most of the time I mean 4/5 shots. I definitely need practice...
I agree 600 is a long ways. I Took my .308 out to 600 on targets with my 3.5-10x40 leupold. That’s the scope I’m putting on my tikka because of how light it is. I would like to close that gap on game but if I ever had a once in a lifetime chance on a huge bull I would like a cartridge capable of...
It’s a very accurate rifle but the more I own it the more it’s flaws bug me. The trigger, stock, and action are all things that need improved. Rather than put a lot of money into a budget ruger to get it where I want, I’d rather purchase a tikka. And tikka has a great aftermarket following if I...
Could you post a picture of your rifle? I’m interested in those stockys stocks but nobody really has a picture or any information about them. Thank you!
I don’t hand load yet so over the counter ammo is all I’ve got for now. I hate having a break on a rifle because of the amount of times I’ve had close shots in thick brush where putting in ear protection wasn’t really an option. One day I’m sure this tikka will become a 280ai because it’s just...
Hey everyone! I’m selling my current ruger American in 308 and I’m buying a tikka. I want one rifle I can keep forever and hunt anything with. The tikkas all have the same length action so a short action caliber has no weight advantage. Keeping in mind this is a light rifle, I want a caliber...
