    First elk hunt

Hardest thing to grasp as a new hunter is that the poop needs to be very very fresh. Not 2 days old. And the area needs to smell like elk. Or you need to have eyes on elk. Otherwise keep looking.

    Suppressed vs Non-Suppressed Hunting

It’s just one of those things that once you go suppressed, you don’t go back. Has anybody shot suppressed for a season or two and said it’s not worth it? That’s kinda the test.

How far will a herd go when they get spooked

Probably depends on what cover they have around, but I see them go down basin 1/2 mile into adjacent thick cover. It’s all about pressure. They’ll go where people stop messing with them. Here it less distance than expected.

    Expanding my scouting area

Help me expand where I can find a monster. The area I hunt for archery, I’ve focused on elevated mountain basin that have willows, grass and timber. I’ve found good bucks in several of them, mostly in bachelor groups. I’d like to develop more spots to glass but lack confidence/creativity in...

CPW Staff changed it's recommendation, they now support archery OTC for residents

I’m amazed at how simple supply demand goes unnoticed in the convo from CPW. Charge more and reduce tags. Revenue stays same, quality goes up. How is CPW gonna fill the rev gap, is an easy answer. NRs can hunt deer at home for cheap. #huntlocal

    Southern Wyoming Cow

Hey crew - I have a cow tag in Southern Wyoming. Runs through Dec. The state reports have good info on when to expect movement: they get bounced out of Utah and CO in late season. I’ll have the kids with me for part of the hunt and have a couple questions: I’ve never hunted that kind of...

IADNR bans cell cam "scouting" during hunting season

When I asked an outfitter I met at the range what should I do to learn about the animals I hunt, he said, run cameras. I live in a western state and nowI’m running cameras, some cell, some not. Honestly I’m torn about whether I’ll use them in hunting season. But I’ve learned a ton about...

Scouting a new area this year?

I ID spots online, hang cameras and check out movement. Even though they won’t be there during season, I like to see the patterns. It’s cool to find spots and get validated.

    Fingers crossed for CO

Well didn’t draw my local unit that was close to 100% last year… one thing I notice (and annoys me) is that NR’s have better odds with same points as residents in some units. Less applicants so they fill all their tags. Just seems wrong in a way even though I understand the math. Yes, yes I’m...

2024 Wyoming elk draw trends General

This is true. States under value what people would pay. Think about the truck/fuel/gear/gun etc. and it’s so much higher cost than the actual thing you need which is the tag. Not saying I want to pay that price but the money I see people drop on non-essentials makes me think the tags price can...

    Come on deer/elk 🙏. At least I got a bear tag 😂

    Tripod or new binoculars?

If you can’t get top glass, get a good light tripod, like a carbon Slik. Hunt with your current glass this year. That way, once you can afford the new glass, you have a pretty sweet setup.
