You are able to start hunting with a rifle at the 5 mile mark, you will often have to venture further to kill your caribou. I have hunted the North Slope many times and done the tundra death march solo, brutal to say the least. I have encountered many hunters over the years who underestimated...
Like you, I used a 7 pin Spot Hog for years. I went with the Options Canyon Pounder last year and really like the ability to swing open the housing for a single slider pin. Worked great for a single pin on the bear bait and dialed in the exact yardage for my caribou. I do wish the pins were...
I have tried a variety of packs over the years and currently using a SG for most hunts. Still...after 20+ years my Barney's external frame is the best for big loads, 100# plus, like brown bear hides and 10 day sheep hunts. The SG is more comfortable for shorter hunts and 60-80# loads. My...
I was on the south end at the end of October. I’ve hunted the same area for years and deer were far fewer than years past and the boat based hunters were the highest I’ve seen.
I'm of the same mind set and would love to spend the full time afield but that temperamental Kodiak weather is the deciding factor. Who are you flying with and what general area? Feel free to message if you'd like. We'll be flying out, weather permitting, on Oct 22nd with Seahawk. It's about all...
With the cold temperatures and good fleshing I don’t feel it’s necessary and won’t be taking any salt. 2 previous unsalted bear hides turned out great.
Sounds like you're pretty well set. I'll be flying out the 22nd for my 13th trip to Kodiak. My 18 yo son has a brown bear tag and this will be his 1st time to Kodiak, going to be an adventure for sure!
I always take 2 bear fences, 1 for tent and 1 for the meat pole. Last thing you want to come...
I’ve done 8 sheep hunts here in AK and worn Sporthill 3sp pants every time, most other hunts also, and never thought they were lacking. Personal preference I guess, dry quickly and comfortable.
Nice ram and write up of your hunt. The preparation for a sheep hunt has always been a huge part of the experience. The satisfaction of having that preparation result in harvesting a ram feels so good, though I’ve learned A LOT on my unsuccessful sheep hunts. Congratulations!
Nice! Being able to cross the river is a huge plus. Got a small bull but looking to head back with my pack raft in a few weeks. I knew better but this was the slowest I've seen it!
Talked to your buddy several times when I was there last week, even saw him skinning out this caribou! Seemed like he and his partner were good dudes and hope his partner tagged out. Weather was poor and caribou were far and few between. I did a get a small bull on a fun stalk but hope to head...
Still hunting with my Switchback XT. I’ve tried some of the newer models but I can’t give it up. The newer, quieter and faster bows are appealing but the Switchback has worked so well over the years, I don’t NEED a new bow…
