Just curious if anyone on this board is in contact with any of the hunters currently in the white mountains of CA chasing desert bighorn sheep? I was personally up there a couple weeks ago poking around… Just wonder what the tag holders are seeing.
I grew up chasing bucks on the east slope of the Sierra Nevada… Mostly in the area you describe it as I live just over the hill near Twain Harte. Helped a friend’s daughter kill a buck up there last year.
As for my buck, the shoulder mount is not done yet… Should be finished up in the next...
I had max points...but had been putting in for that hunt since well before the preference point system was initiated. So...to answer your question….probably close to 30 years or so.
Had the opportunity to hunt Columbian Whitetail in Oregon on a friend’s ranch a couple of years ago. We set trail cameras about a month before the opening of the season and were able to pattern several mature bucks. On the first day of my hunt, one of those mature bucks presented himself, and...
In 2023 I was fortunate enough to finally draw a coveted late season mule deer hunt in my home state of California. Having hunted this unit several times with other friends, I knew the potential for this zone to produce nice mature bucks… and that’s exactly what we found. I was prepared to hunt...
His name is Bob Pagel. He wrote an article in the CA WSF Newsletter last year. Here's a link for those interested in the story of his hunt:

It was the same ram (as confirmed by the other hunter's outfitter). At the angle we were viewing him from the ram appeared to meet the criteria set forth by CA DFW to be “legal”...but not by much. Because it was still early on in the hunt, my friend elected to keep hunting in hopes of finding...
We were not successful in taking a ram. The group that was successful shot the ram we passed on (seen in slide show bedded in boulder field) several days later. We only turned up 3 legal rams in 16 days of HARD glassing/hunting....one of which was prior to the opener. We never were able to...
I hear ya….But nothing says you can’t still hunt while you’re building points! Probably shot at least 10 deer in California hunting the D-zones while waiting to draw this hunt… not to mention countless out-of-state mule deer hunts too. I really don’t feel that I missed out on anything by...
I'm new to this forum...was encouraged to join and check out a thread posted by another member that drew a White Mountains tag las season. After reading a good portion of the 80 pages of commemnts (WOW...that's gotta be some sort of record!) one of several take-aways was that there were members...
