Well the savage failed to feed, bolt would go about half way before the round would get sticky in the chamber. Took some wiggling to get it sent home. Then failure to extract. Light wiggle would get the round out of the chamber. Bolt action felt a bit stiff. Reportedly a newer rifle with a dozen...
Thanks a bunch for the info! I'm going to try my luck in the Idaho OTC debacle first as a contingency plan. I have 5 points in Wyoming which would have likely gotten me a general tag this year, but not sure how that will play out next year with point creep. What sucks about WY is the draw...
Confusing part of that is there is no "Spike" selection on the hunt planner map. I'm going to read the regulations book a bit more..
So the goal here is to get boots on the ground with a meat tag and hear some good bugling and rut action. Would be great to arrow or shoot some meat, cow, spike...
Are Utah's "Spike Hunts" done by obtaining a General Elk tag and hunting in portions of limited entry units that are "Spike only"?
Is this an accurate Utah elk break down?
Limited entry: (Takes many points/crazy luck to get, hunt big bulls in excellent units)
General tag: Hunt general elk...
I like your thinking...
and good tip on the acetone/loctite. I didnt clean the screws but I did put more like a gob of blue loctite on them before screwing the rail back down.
Funny you say that, after my first 2 trips where my scope lost zero I put a trijicon huron on the 30-06!
Come to find out the problem was a loose picatinny rail from the factory! Im thinking it was slowly backing out until I pick up the rifle in the back country of idaho and see the damn thing...
Well, I've come across a savage 110 ultralight used with reported 15 rounds through the pipe for $975 out the door. Its in 6.5 creed. I may give up on goldilocks and get me a new deer rifle. Im going to check it out tomorrow. Hard to beat for that price..
Tell you what, doing a deep dive into...
I'll definitely look into that.. I'm opening up to the idea of a suppressor now that they dont take a lifetime to get. They are more expensive, longer, and reduce recoil less... but as you said, dont spook game as bad and way better on the ears
Your first sentence strikes a chord. There is a trade off for everything...no one wants to lug a heavy rifle up hills, but its sure nice when you settle in for a shot..
Being in FL I don't have very easy access to true long range stuff on a regular basis. I would like to reliably reach out to...
Thank you for the replies so far! Should have mentioned before, I wont be doing any reloading, so ammo availability and cost is a consideration. No big deal spending an extra $10-15/box, but I don't think I am a candidate for any exotic rounds
Short history: Got into the western hunting scene 2019 with a WY general elk tag (first application ever submitted, drew with zero points). Not wanting to bring my dear old dads 1970s M77 .308 (sentimental value RIP), with little research I purchased a Savage 110 Apex Storm in 30-06 that came...
This is an interesting tag, sounds like you can put yourself in big bull country and see big bulls but with a cow/spike tag.
Seems like a very early hunt though, pre rut you think?
Update:
Will post a full report but wanted to make a quick update. Weather was beautiful and warm the first few days. Hunted fairly close to the river on the north side. Saw very little by way of deer...a few does most mornings and evenings but nothing to keep us in the area. Switched zones and...
