My current favorite is my Tikka TSX compact in .308 Win.
last season I shot my handloads which consist of 150 grain Nosler Accubonds, 46 grains of Varget, in a Starline brass case with 200 CCI primers.
I have that load dialed in out to 300 yards, and would not go much further than that.

Retired Public School Teacher.
retired almost six years ago at 58.
I have things that keep me busy, and I can pretty much hunt scout or anything thus related whenever I like.
My Wife gives me things to do on occasion, but for the most part she allows me my hunting, and all that goes with it.
It...
How does that Kyle’s sheath work with the wood scales?
Does it wear on the finish at all?
I’ve been thinking on getting one for my field dressing knife as it is always blood covered after working with it and I don’t like putting it back into a leather sheath soiled.
I live in communist NY.
I have to get a background check now to buy ammunition and have to pay a fee for said background check.
So far I don’t have to do that to buy components, but I’m sure somewhere down the road they’ll try to do something about that.
I just continue to pick up components as...
My handloads are 150 grain Accubonds with 46 grains Varget and are very accurate and work very well on whitetails.
Unfortunately NY is probably going non-lead on state lands soon and I do a bunch of public hunting so I’ve been playing around with 130 grain ttsx
I have a Tikka T3x compact .308 with a 20” barrel that I handload for. When I first bought it I used Hornady’s american whitetail ammo to sight it in. It was very accurate out of my rifle, and is relatively inexpensive.
150 grains, and is, I believe, the interlock bullet.
I’m from communist NY and they’re talking about going lead free on state lands. I do a lot of public land hunting so I’ve been working up a load for Barnes TTSX for when that happens.
If I lived in Canada then I would absolutely start loading my own!
As restrictive as Canada is becoming, it is only a matter of time before they start regulating what, and how much you can have.
That said, you can get into reloading relatively inexpensivly.
At midway right now a Lee challenger...
Seems when we were young that we had snow every Christmas here in CNY.
Lately however we don’t. The last white Christmas we had was in 2018 if I remember correctly.
Deer hunting is a great thing to get into.
I’m 63 and I’ve only been hunting 10 years. I got into hunting very late and came from a family that didn’t Hunt while I was growing up. My Brother is an avid hunter who‘s close friend got him into hunting.
I had two Brother In-laws (we recently lost...
I 100% totally agree.
i too am a late onset hunter.
ive had my successes but I continue to try and get better and would like to understand the “little instinctual or strategic decisions that lead you to the right spot at the right time”.
I’ve been shooting 150 grain Accubonds from my .308 with very good results.
I shot a Doe the end of this season and there was an excellent blood trail, a 3” exit hole, and she only traveled approximately 40 yds before she dropped.
The heart was exploded, and the lungs were cut in half.
If I were...
My first rifle was a Remington 700 in 30-06 with a 24” barrel.
I’ve taken many deer with it.
i bought a Tikka T3x compact in .308 Win. With a 20” barrel, and it’s what I hunt with now.
I can shoot a softball sized group (off a rest) with my handloads at 300 yards confidently.
i won’t shoot over...
It would seem that if it were seated a little longer it wouldn’t be compressed as much so that could affect things.
Ill have to play with that.
thanks for the info!
According to quick load data, 49.09 grains of Varget and 130 grain ttsx is approximately 3001 fps.
my Tikka unfortunately doesn’t like 49 grains and prefers around 47, so according to QL that is roughly 2877 fps.
maybe if I play with seating depth as mine are seated at 2.769 COAL.
As of the last couple of years I’ve become a wool guy.
I wear merino wool first layers from Kuiu.
then on top I have a Pendleton wool button up shirt, and a Johnson wool Jac shirt.
I wear Big Bills wool hunting pants on the bottom.
Wool is quiet and warm. It’s the most comfortable I’ve been...
