UPDATE a year later “Are alpha worth it?” How I answered it for me (answering?) Swaro, Zeiss, GPO…Maven

Agreed on your assessment of low/no light. I’ve hunted with the alphas you mentioned and almost alphas (Steiner etc) down to regular field grade leupold and bushnell. On scopes and binoculars If counting antler points is something required of you (like me in nw pa) the alphas give me almost...

    Blade Steel Comparison

My vote goes to Magnacut and 3v. In my non scientific testing they field dress, skin and breakdown deer better than the other steel mentioned here. That said every butcher I’ve ever watched uses regular kitchen knives and a steel to produce same or better results.

Good fixed blade knife for backcountry hunts

I’ve tried a lot of different knives over the years. Best I found for dressing deer is 3v and Magnacut as far as edge retention goes. I also find a toothy edge is best for me as I think it cuts down on the amount of hair it cuts. No longer into the mirror polished edges.

I’d stay away from red in any firearms application. Blue will do fine. Give it time to cure.

    Savage long range

I agree with the above. I’ve shot long range out to 1000. The guys I shoot with are good shooters with thousands of rounds fired over the years. We start most shooting sessions with a cold bore shot at known distance between 600-800 yds. It’s humbling.

DIY Backpacking Meals, By Jake Lamphier

Great article. Another added benefit is you know what you’re eating. Looking at the ingredients and nutritional values on other meals is eye opening.

Single Best Workout to Prepare For Elk Hunting?

I’m no expert but rucking is my vote. That said your body isn’t meant to carry a super heavy ruck. When I was in the army we lost more soldiers to injuries from rucking with too heavy a pack than any other training. There’s a lot of training value in ankle weights vs putting all that weight on...
