    WTS Kestrel skeleton Ovis

With the thin stock, do you miss having scales? I’m interested in one of these but have only used an Izula II without scales, and that’s quite a bit thicker. Also— is this Nitro V or a different steel?

    Kenetreks wrecking my feet.

Maybe Sportiva Nepal Cubes? They are insulated w a fairly narrow heel (my subjective impression) and more forward / aft mobility for moving with your ankle instead of against it. I think the heavy boot / lots of ‘support’ approach makes it harder to avoid blisters, hence the Nepal...

    Let’s talk tripods….

At work we would use a monster Vortex or Swaro scope on a heavy video tripod. When I’m hunting by myself I bring a Vortex Razor HD 11-33x50. The scope is light so the tripod is too: Carbon legs with aluminum hardware. No plastic. Extends high enough. Aoka brand. Center column removed and head...

    Let’s talk cordage

Some awesome options in this thread. Coming from a climbing background I appreciate cord with a real ‘stiff’ hand, like Zpacks sells on their site. It really helps with resisting tangles and untying, vs some of the super light but thin / slippery options above.

    Kenetreks wrecking my feet.

Sorry to hear that. I get blisters in the same area with boots that don’t have adequate heel hold, either due to being too long or too high volume in the heel. Technique makes a small difference (pied a troisemme vs front pointing) as does Leukotape. Changing up insoles and socks might help a...

Good fixed blade knife for backcountry hunts

Mentioned the Altitude above— another real lightweight one but more traditional is the L T Wright Bandit (4" AEBL). It's kind of a bird and trout / sodbuster pattern. have size XL hands and it's almost exactly proportional to my index finger— balance point is at your knuckle, blade tip is where...

    Favorite Bino Harness?

Some of these are pretty heavy. I tried the Marsupial and it was nice but I thought a little overbuilt for backpacking. I have one of the mystery ranches and it’s nice that you can put your bear spray on the bottom, and attach the whole thing to your pack shoulder straps if you don’t want to...

    How heavy is your tripod?

I forget if they were mentioned above, but the Slik Sprint Mini is 590 grams with the head and center column gone and the Oben 28” carbon tripod with lots of threads on here is sub 1 lb. The Slik one is pretty sturdy for its size; here’s a shot with it. The Oben is the same price and less weight...

    How heavy is your tripod?

I usually don’t bring a tripod for my rifle… or scope. I glass with the binos and when I need to see if a dot has antlers, I rest the scope (25oz) on my pack carefully. I don’t bring a full size scope. I do have a Slik tripod, about 1.5 lbs with the center column removed and a ball head, but...

Lighter pack for High Country Mule Deer

Also worth taking into account the weight from extra waterproof stuff sacks, pack cover, etc, which you can leave behind if your pack is a big waterproof drybag, like Seek Outside and a few other brands use.

Lighter pack for High Country Mule Deer

FWIW, some of the Seek Outside packs are 6300+ cu and half the weight of some packs mentioned here. It looks like they have gotten more complicated since I bought mine, the Unaweep, which was just a giant drybag with a floating pocket on the back that doubled as a compression panel. I have it in...

Rifle carry while back country hunting

Regarding pulling on one side of the hip belt: I have a seek outside pack which has some exposed frame at the bottom. I attached the Kuiu gun bearer with one side to the frame and one side to my hip belt. It distributes the weight better and I can ride a bike without my leg hitting the stock. I...

    Alaska Airlines and firearms case

I have taken multiple rifles, bikes, skis on AK air. They have charged me for overweight, but never oversized— even for 215cm long skis, and a cargo bike that was in two bike bikes duct taped together. You might get a stickler but I wouldn’t sweat it.

    Cell service in Alaska

I’ve lived in Juneau, Wasilla, and Anchorage and have a cabin N of Talkeetna. ATT has worked great for me.

    Spyderco Stretch 2 XL comparison

I’ve been curious about Spyderco’s new Stretch 2 XL as a hunting knife, since it comes in pretty light for a ~4” blade. For anyone else interested, here it is for size comparison next to a Para 3 LW and an LT Wright Bandit. Hope that helps anyone considering picking one of these up.

    Bike trailers

I will try to dig up some pics, but here is what has worked for me, caribou hunting, about 30 miles rt and a few thousand feet of climbing, on pretty good mining roads with a fair number of stream crossings: Burley flatbed trailer Ditched the tiny wheels Put on the larger wheels from my Burley...
