Meeker resident here. Agreed 1000%. I wont do business with many folks from the front range. Probably a petty thing to do, but its one small thing I can do to avoid them at all costs.
Same here. I live in Meeker and work in Hayden. I have never seen so many elk on my ay to work than I have the last month. Hundreds a day and they are belly deep in snow, sometimes the calves are barely able to see over the drifts.
My girlfriend of many years doesnt care how much I hunt anymore. She knows to not plan anything in May, September or 4th rifle. She goes with me to scout, helps with hunts like logisitics/transport meat and is a big supporter in me going after my dreams of chasing big game. I guess the only...
I use an 1895 Chilean 7mm Mauser that was grandfathers. Still shoots well if I use heavy bullets. Not sure I would take it on a multiday backcountry hunt but its fun for coyotes and day hunts just walking in the woods.
Good to see so many people getting involved in western hunting. I live in Meeker, CO and am happy to share what intel I can of the area or to help others be successful. Its a lot of work to hunt out west but sure is satisfying.
I have been shooting the 6.8 Western since last year. Ammo is pretty abundant for it here, I have about 250 rounds stocked. I am about to order a 7mmPRC and try that this fall on mule deer. The Backcountry Hunt with Joseph Von Benedict has a lot of recent podcasts on those 2 rounds that are...
Meeker resident here. The hunting has been crap this year with a 30mi radius around L07 where the 18 head were killed. I hope anyone that's in favor of the reintroduced wolves never has another cold beer and goes flaccid forever. It had been a rough year.
Meeker resident here. Friends at church had 14 I think killed. Hunting was terrible this year as stated. Its only going to get worse across the state once more are introduced.
Meeker resident here. We got about 6inches of snow today, I imagine above 8k by sleepy cat, pagoda and hay flats got much more than that. I havent seen LO7 all day from my porch. Are your tags for first rifle, I must have misread the OP?
Probably the outlier here, but I rub mink oil on mine a week and then again 3 days before my trip. Leave them in the sun a few hours to really let it penetrate. Outside of that, I make sure my socks are only an inch or two above the top of the boot.
I like to have 2 or 3 units in mind each year. Depending on rainfall over the year, weather during hunt and scouting, I like to have a lot of options. They dont have to be next to each other either. As long as they are about an hour or two drive apart, I keep them on the short list.
