    Muscular Endurance for Mountain Athletes

Also I Love me some Rippetoe for a solid dose or common sense 😁, Particularly fond of the often used “'Strong people are harder to kill than weak people and more useful in general.”

    Muscular Endurance for Mountain Athletes

I really believe it’s unnecessary to train with more than 60 pounds. Maybe someone can push it to 70 if you’re a big dude. Rucking around with 100 pounds isn’t going to give any real physiological adaptations but certainly will increase your chances of tweaking your knee or back. Packing out...

    Help with Schnee’s Pac boots

Well I ended up ordering a new liner and felt insoles. The insoles made things way too tight but the new liners were perfect. I have no idea how old these are since they’re in great shape but the old liners are clearly very old and compressed. I’m hopeful these are some of the old Hunter 2’s...

    Muscular Endurance for Mountain Athletes

Don’t know how your breaking up your circuit but I would say that using more than 25% body weight for lunges is def gonna move away from ME and more towards anaerobic strength mostly due to the longer range of motion and eccentric component. I would probably keep those below 20%. Same goes for...

    Help with Schnee’s Pac boots

Thanks! Do you feel like they ever run small? Also I don’t have narrow feet, I’m right at the edge of wide at 4” but don’t have a ton of volume.

I “popped” my achilles about 14 years ago and was a terrible experience. I too added calves at the end of my gym ME sessions earlier this year using MTI’s Tabata calve raises. 20” rapid calve raises, 10” hold at the top x2 Rest 30-45” and repeat.

    Help with Schnee’s Pac boots

I recently picked up a used pair of Schnee’s Hunter II’s that are in great shape for cheap. I was planning on keeping them in the truck for 3rd rifle elk in case things get really cold/snowy but am worried they won’t work in the steep terrain I plan to hunt. I’m in between 10.5 & 11 and these...

    Muscular Endurance for Mountain Athletes

ME training has to be viewed within the context of block periodization. It can be 10x more effective when used that way. It works best after building a solid endurance/max strength base. it’s also better to alternate ME blocks & Max Strength/Base block every 8 weeks vs always trying to build...

Also should ad if your doing lunges or step-ups do 10 reps on leg then 10 reps other leg rest 30 seconds. Jumping lunges are stressful enough were it doesn’t matter if your swapping legs during the set, but still do 10x for each leg. I’ll also take 2-3 minutes active recovery between exercises.

Another reason single leg exercises is better with ME -besides it being more sport specific to hiking- is you mostly eliminate the muscle lengthening that happens at the top and bottom of a squat. You want to keep tension on the muscle being used for the set duration. Taking a 30-45” between...

    Muscular Endurance for Mountain Athletes

I would recommend if doing a gym style ME session try to stick with single leg movements. focus on producing that consistent leg burn without jacking your HR. I’m a pretty strong guy and have found that a circuit of body weight lunges, step-ups, & jumping lunges done with the right amount of...

    Muscular Endurance for Mountain Athletes

I agree 100%. If you can afford to hunt western big game then you can sure as hell afford to get a membership or punch card for a gym with a Stepmill. Even though I’m 45 min from a great 35% fall line, I primarily use a Stairmaster for my ME sessions and even some endurance sessions when it’s...

Also just doing this without the uphill block is probably much safer and effective than trying to hike with 110 lbs, if you don’t have access to steep enough terrain

    Muscular Endurance for Mountain Athletes

For those that can’t get to the mountains during the week I’ve found adding a few sets of jumping lunges & squat jumps after a Stairmaster ME session does a pretty good job of building endurance for the downhills. And if I’m doing steep hiking with a lighter pack on the weekend seems to convert...

    Uncommon elk hunting strategy

I’m curious how many of you have found success just pulling off a main road or hwy and dropping or climbing straight in to an area. I’ve actually only hunted 1 or 2x out of a main trailhead or even trail systems and have found most sign and success just 1-3 miles away from these places. My last...

Boots - are we doing it wrong

Finally finished the whole podcast. I know both those guys have way more hunting experience and I agree on a lot of what they’re saying I still think there’s a place for a stiff boot. That might just be more Steve’s feet that needs more flex. One topic that stood out to me was Steve saying he...

Boots - are we doing it wrong

I have the same tx3’s and love them. They are a bomb proof shoe, I’ve even worn some crampons on them for steep snow and they worked great.

Boots - are we doing it wrong

Also there are a lot of moderately technical peaks and long routes like on the Grand Teton where in the summer it makes more sense to do the whole climb in approach shoes with sticky rubber. That’s way more enjoyable.
