Orange Insulated Vest - Outer Layer

I wear Wildfowler Waterproof Insulated Parka jacket and pants for cold weather deer hunting. Waterproof, quiet, and very comfortable. They also have non-insulated as well.

    Lefty rifle for Alaska

I have a moose hunt coming up this Sept-Oct in northern Alberta. I'm a lefty and am taking my LH Browning BAR 30-06 as my primary gun and my Henry 45-70 as my backup. Ammo for the Browning will be Buffalo Bore Supercharged Lead-Free 168 gr Barnes TTSX. Whenever possible I shoot a LH weapon...

Big Agnes: Copper Spur HV3 Expedition or Guard Station 4?

Is anyone familiar with the Guard Station 4 (or 8)? I really like this tent, but am not finding anyone who actually owns one.

Big Agnes: Copper Spur HV3 Expedition or Guard Station 4?

This fall I’ll be going on a moose hunt in N. Alberta. It’ll be an 8-day hunt. While there is a lodge, the transit time from the lodge to the hunting grounds is over very rough terrain in an Argo, sometimes as much as 1.5 hours each way. I’d much prefer to do an 8-day remote camp and save my...

Bino Harness- what are you taking?

I've been using the HornHunter OP-X combo Bino Harness system for the past couple of years. 1a. Very comfortable. Can adjust them riding high or low as desired. 1b. Harness system allows for binos to drop into case, or if I prefer, allow them to hang right where I want them for quick access...

    Cold Weather Camp

When I did my SERE training it was 4th - 26th, Jan 1982 north of Spokane, WA. Was in single digits every night. Strip down to your underwear, put your boots, gloves, clothing, etc. in your sleeping bag with you. Cover the top of your head. You'll be fine.

Going from multiple rifles to just one

I don't do any hunting beyond 200 - 300 yards tops. It's whitetail deer (although I do have a moose hunt planned for next year). Most of my shots are < 100 yards. For deer it's my Henry 44 Rem Mag Big Boy. For the moose it'll be my Henry 45-70 and expected to be shooting < 150 yards. I will...

Leatherman Surge for me. Own 4 of them. 2 x cars, 1 x boat, and 1 x for EDC. Stainless steel is great.

    Any Engineers on Here

I work for one of the largest computer companies in the world. The IT programming world is all handled offshore - mostly India. You will not be able to compete with them on price. Very few companies in the US are hiring American programmers. It's much cheaper to offshore it to India...

I buy it all online. Ammoseek.com. Never had a problem.

    Ideal Bear Defense Long Gun?

I have not seen the 5-shot restriction for shotguns anywhere. I know that bullpups are not legal, but in terms of capacity restrictions in and of themselves I have not seen it. I am taking my Ithaca Model 37 Home Defense shotgun with me as my camp gun (7+1) on my Alberta moose hunt this fall.

Spotting moose: Binoculars or Spotting Scope

Eyes are slowly getting worse. Cataracts are making things less clear. I have a decent pair of Leupold 10x42 binoculars. I’m told that pretty much all shots will be less than 250 yds, with the bulk being < 100 yds. Max spotting distance is expected to be < 500 yds. I have a tripod...

    Backpacking old dudes

67 years old here. I haven’t been backpack hunting in years - decades. Air Force and life in general kept getting in the way. Quite honestly, I woke up one morning and realized I was 65 years old. I’d done my share of hunting and fishing (still do, but it’s mostly duck/pheasant), but my...

Anyone solo backcountry hunting over the age of 60?

I can’t believe I didn’t see this sub-forum before! I’m 67 now, and planning on doing an 8-day guided moose hunt next year in N. Alberta. It is a bucket list item for me. I have asked to do a spike camp away from the lodge as it’s a 2 hour trip each way on a UTV. I don’t know if the guide...

Getting best of both worlds - "standard" and long-range riflescope?

3-15x44 is a good all around scope. I have the Leupold VX-5HD 3-15x44 Firedot on my Browning BAR 30-06. For my Henry 45-70 I have a VX-5HD 1-5x24 Firedot on it because I'm not shooting as far with it.

    Buying guns

talk to the guy on the phone. have him send a pic of the item with a hand written note with is name, today's date - and you specify a color that he writes on the note. For example "Blue". That will show you that he actually has the item. Next, take 5 minutes to create a GunTab account. Each...
