Garrett Pin Pointer. Pricey but cheaper than a crown.

    Lightest threaded barrel .22

I know you said you wanted a rifle but are you married to that? I carry a Ruger MKIV 22/45 Lite (pistol) and it's great for grouse. I keep a small red dot on it and it works great at the ranges I'm usually taking grouse, especially during elk season. It has a threaded barrel and it super...

    Gun boxes

Do you plan to ever sell it? If so, the box is not only handy to ship it in but could add some value (not a lot, maybe $20 for being able to say "original box!"? I mean if somebody is Christmas shopping, they might like that...) I'm kind of a hoarder and can't imagine ever selling a gun. I...

    Turkey Smoking?

I smoke things regularly and swear by temp probes. All the pro's smoke "to a temperature" not "for an amount of time". Multiple probes are ideal and personally I don't stuff my birds. It can be done faster but I do 225, Medium (5/10) Smoke, about 10 hours depending on the bird. I shoot for 145...

    Colorado Fake Tag Caps??

"CO" is a state and doesn't have wants and wishes. "CO residents" (the ones that I know) didn't ask non-residents for help defeating 127 - one of the most common complaints that I saw during the debates up to the ballot were that outside money was involved in the first place. Many "out of state"...

What hunter stage are you in?

I would say "Sportsman" but I skipped the other stages. I wasn't raised in a hunting lifestyle and got into it very late in life (42). But I was never into it for trophies OR desperate to "limit out." For me it's always been Experience #1, Meat #2, all else after that.

    Wilderness Hunting Reciprocity. Good idea?

It seems like a slippery slope. Where you do you stop after doing this except for every Western state to more or less compete to apply every potentially negative rule to every other state's residents? Iron-sights only if you're from states that only allow iron sights? Season reduced from 7->5...

9mm vs 10mm for Bear defense.

Honestly, "bears" has to be the one topic where debates over "6 shooter reliability" vs "15 in the mag" actually still have some meaning today. :D If Mr Bear ever does come for me, you can just call me "spray and pray"...

9mm vs 10mm for Bear defense.

Same. Glock 20, 10mm, Underwood hard-cast. Some say the G20 isn't accurate with hard-cast but it's worked well for me at the range. If in grizzly country, Ruger Super Redhawk, 44-mag. I approached this one from the numbers. The 10-auto is one of the few rounds that meets the "minimum energy of...

    Down booties

I'm a huge fan. I have generic ones from Amazon and think they work probably just as well. Pro tip. Throw a pair of feet warmers in there before bed. You'll be toasty all night.

Do you tip your game processor?

The most effective tips are to those who never get them. I called for a propane delivery a week ago, but told them no rush - we just got 2' of snow and the roads are a slick, muddy mess here to the homestead. The guy braved the roads today and made it through two mud bogs to top us off before...

Rant - What happened to respect for other hunters???

We often tolerate behavior among friends and family that would drive us nuts from a stranger. And we all know "that guy", don't we? The guy that does the thing that if he was a stranger, he'd be swimming back to shore, but if he's your friend, it's just "goddammit Steve..."

What is "proper cheek weld" I'm getting different advice

Never heard of that, and I would counter that unless you're shooting off a rest (in which case who cares?) SOMETHING needs to anchor the butt of the rifle. A cheek weld makes sort of a triangle to hold it in place sideways. Without that, it's just floating around on your shoulder which can move...

    Brittany Spaniel...

I've only owned one Britt but one other thing I noticed, they're natural trail dogs. I never hunted upland with mine but with no training at all he would take off about 25 yards down a trail in front of me, then criss-cross it back and forth. That's a natural flushing behavior but I've never had...

CO Mountain Lion Ballot Initiative: Continuous Updates

To me, waiting for a ballot initiative to get going IS reacting late. Playing defense once the other team has the ball is short-sighted and a poor way to win a war. You're all happy now, but were sure biting your nails last night wondering, and "winning" this 55 to 45 was not a big victory to...

CO Mountain Lion Ballot Initiative: Continuous Updates

Let's face it, folks. We got lucky. This came as a surprise, we reacted late, and none of us were sure how it would turn out. We need to be on the lookout for these things earlier, fight them smarter, and counter where we can.

CO Mountain Lion Ballot Initiative: Continuous Updates

IMO, we shouldn't consider this out of the woods until we see La Plata (Durango), Archuleta (Pagosa), Boulder, Jefferson, and Larimer.

CO Mountain Lion Ballot Initiative: Continuous Updates

Exactly. The maps can be super misleading if you try to read too much into them, and "land doesn't vote." But this DOES count in Denver and Arapahoe, and many of the remaining counties are expected to go the other way, so this lead is still promising. I'm a data nut, if it wasn't obvious.

CO Mountain Lion Ballot Initiative: Continuous Updates

Still WAAAAY to early to get excited - lots of ski towns will probably go the other way. But promising.
