I'm the guy that's spooking all your elk

I was always cautious and hoped for the stars to align. I started consistently killing elk and mule deer when I understood when to be aggressive and when to be patient. It all comes down to wind, cover, the animal's activity and awareness.

San Juan / Elk Ridge Questions

You'll find them just about everywhere, even in the low desert. You'll have to find some deep hell holes to get that 400 incher. Start at the notch.

    Go in deep!

Haha. No, Not all elk hunting should be that hard. But, if that is where they are, you have to go where they are to kill one.

    Should I move?

Keep moving around until you see fresh sign or activity. It took me 8 years to kill my first bull, then I killed bull the next 6 years in a row. Once you're in them, things will look up. As far as bugling at night, that's a great way to get tight-lipped bulls to respond. They are more apt to...

Talk me out of 300 WSM

I have a 300 WSM and it's a great gun, but the ammo has been nearly impossible to find. In two years, I have seen it once.

    Shipping Meat/Cape from Kotz

The guys at RAM will take care of the antlers and cape for you. They kept everything frozen and shipped them to Anchorage, where a guy from the Wildlife Gallery fleshed out the cape and treated the velvet. Wildlife Gallery took about 6 months to get everything sent to us at Kifaru. As far as the...
