Thanks for getting this thread going again. I currently have 10X RF binos, Zeiss conquest HD 15X, an old nikon ed50, and a Kowa 664M. When you look at weight-it's always easy to bring a 34 oz bino, and 20-28 oz spotter makes sense. Once I got the 46 oz 15X binos I never want to leave them...
Based on just glassing spots I think the garden trowel would also be best for size/weight. But, I also have the cold steel. 31.5 with the sheath, and it fits great hung between pack frame and pack bag. I sharpen mine and split wood with it, and great for cutting brush around glassing spots...
Great discussion and ideas-thanks all. I think it's important to look at where and when you hunt and build a system. I bow elk, do some above timberline hunts, and later season deer and elk hunt in Rockies. After several years ended up with a warbonnet hammock kit with quilts for September, a...
I recommend gunbearer, especially the older nylon web version. Ended up just using cord and some holes to adjust height. Also started using a sea to summit 12" stretch loc strap to hold rifle on shoulder strap. I think it's easier to put rifle on, especially with gloves on. The elastic cord...
I was also sucked in when I saw them at WHE. They're awesome. Check out the nite ize aluminum cam jam -cheap at home depot- for another good piece of gear to hold 550 like when pulling elk leg up and hold it without having to tie a knot.
Great question. And with the caveat that it costs less than the rifle you put it on-have to go with Leupold VX3HD 4.5-14x40. Side focus, windplex, zero lock- Perfect features for $750 and under a pound.
Great advice, thank you. I currently have Kowa 66-got it because it's 12 oz lighter than 77, and solid scope for $1300. But, not prominar, lower grade of ED glass, small eyebox, and magview adapter doesn't fit on 66 eyepiece. Have any of you made jump from 66 to 77 and is it night and day...
I saw you mentioned hiking. I was lucky enough to get a goat tag couple years ago so heavily researched tripods. Ended up with Field Optics Research FT6229C. There are lighter tripods (oem weight 59 oz), but this one converts into trekking poles / poles to pitch a tarp shelter / shooting...
I have both. VA5 of course is incredibly smooth. But it's 16.5 oz and big. Wiser is tiny and 7. I added a cheap sunwayfoto spc50 so I can use Arca or pic rail on a rifle to shoot, and think it's perfect. I only have Kowa 66 for weight comparison, and it pans fine. I got tired of having to...
Very interesting idea. I bought a flat pack stove from Seek Outside a few years ago and it is a life changing add if you have any type of hot tent. It's small enough and light enough that you're glad to pack it for any Oct-Nov backpack hunts.
Check out belts offered by Hill People Gear and Seek Outside. The HPG will slip through that opening in lumbar pad. SO attaches a different way, but could also work. I did also order a different size belt for a Mystery Ranch pack and they attach with velcro like you have there.
Different concept, but I like this seat I had sewn up. Cordura pouch with velcro opening for inflatable or foam pad, and some straps with gate keeper buckles to attach to pack frame. Attach the back of the pouch to bottom of your pack. Easy to take on/off, and good back support-and your seat...
Very nice work. Can anybody recommend some currently available sewing machines that are smart buys? I'd like to get a machine that will do cordura as well as thicker nylon webbing and through pack belts etc. No idea what brands or features I should look for. Thanks.
