I hunted 317 last year on private. Didn't encounter any bears no bear sign for whatever that is worth. The guides I was with work the land year round, so that probably helps with the lack of predators in their area. Hopefully there are bulls on that side of the valley for you!
Nothing wrong with the sig cross. It's a good gun. I don't know what your ridgeline is chambered in, but I would suggest a stronger caliber than 6.5 creed for elk. I have seen way too many wounded bulls from 6.5 creed. 6.5 PRC at least, if not something with more energy. Make it a no doubter...
