I bought a pair of Leki folders with the length adjustment. They seem fine when I have used them, but I found them to rattle at the joints a little. My Leki telescopes are workhorses that are over ten years old. I carved down the rubber on one of the ends so I can invert and put that end inside...
My last ID November hunt I passed up 6 or 8 4x4 bucks. I found the winner with 2 days left. I grazed some hair off his belly. I chased him for 2 days in blowing snow. He kicked my ass and sent me home. I was likely the last person to see him that year. One of the funnest and most educational...
there are plenty of quality truck camping spots that border big wilderness areas. Set up a truck camp that you can return to every 2-3 days. The commitment to pack many days of food and water can just add stress. Hunting season has really long nights. I didn’t mind a few hours hiking in and back...
I have the exped 7. I have the cover sleeve on it all the time. Bottom is tough. Top is comfortable to lay on. I will sometimes just where my bag like a quilt and sleep directly on the pad.
I make sure and keep the inflation low enough to let the hip and shoulder sink in. Much more comfy.
It is refreshing to see I am not alone in my resistance to quit hunting solo. I am currently 1 week into knee replacement recovery(ouch). I have switched it up in the recent years to see what is working best for me. I like the leap frog plan if I can hump loads up a steep climb to a trail head...
I see some discussion on guylines. I have 24" long loops on all my small shelters. You can choke around a log or a big rock with ease. in good weather, I can set up nice and high for comfort.
I messed with a bivy and tarp setup but couldnt stand the confinement and the condensation. If you have a bivy and a tarp why not just do one of these??
1. trek pole floored tent like 6 moons lunar solo or a tarptent.
2. center pole tarp with a nest
I loved my copper spur, but it cant handle...
Look for roads that get up as high as possible so you dont have to climb so much elevation. Find the trailheads that are too small for horse trailers. There are quite a few groups that pack in on horses for this hunt, and they fill up a basin in a hurry.
Dont be afraid of being up close to the...
The high altitude blactail area I frequent also comes with the large wilderness burn areas. I try to setup camp in the timber atleast 1/2 mile in from the burn area.
I agree on the backside of the ridge, but it can suck to find a flat spot to camp on. I dont worry so much about getting close to...
glad to be back home after a couple years in FL. Finally got to get out in the woods and enjoy some hunt time. really enjoy seeing all these great bucks on this thread every year.
I use the Kifaru std lid and swap out whatever pocket seems appropriate for daily stuff. I have a large belt pouch or a L&L#11. I will tuck my rain gear and tripod under the lid. Once I am in day pack hunt mode, I seldom have to get in the main bag unless digging out my tarp or ground chair to...
I tried a bivy. didnt like the confinement for just a couple of oz.
tried the super minney air pads from Klymit. Couldnt move the next day.
took a zero rated bag to the Frank in November without rerally understanding how bags are rated and most lie. I froze my ass off for 2 weeks. bought a -20...
If you can find a Kifaru Urban Zippy, I have been using it for years. carries an oversize laptop and 11x17 drawings. side pockets for cords. you can put lash kits and and any mesh mounted pockets.
I can vouch for this. If its messy, toot on a cow call and push through the brush. You can almost be in plain sight and they still get a little confused. Just buys you a few minutes because the smart cow with the nose up will figure you out shortly.
My family and friends have been altered for life by the 2020 OR fires. It is strange how much the hair stands up at the sight, smell, or story of any fire now. Most of our lives we were the "couldnt happen to us here in town" catagory.
Stay safe everyone.
