@nphunter Good information. I'm the same as you when under load, constantly adjusting here and there when through the woods and on the trail. I am using a Duplex Lite and I find it great for making both macro and micro adjustments of the load between shoulders, hips, and lifters.
@roosiebull Totally agree. I typically train with a 50# sand bag; fits nicely on the frame. But it's very different than an elk quarter.
To simulate an elk quarter, I've found that 60# tube sand is pretty close to bone-in meat in terms of characteristics while on your back. They are long and...
@Vaultman I use the Nite Ize SlideLock KeyRack for this purpose. Take off the key/set of keys/FOB you need for that moment or moment ahead so you don’t have to have your full key kit with you all the time.
The regular Nite Ize S-Biners are nice, but they have a frustratingly fatal flaw which it...
I have these on an AGC bino harness for accessory pouches. They are easy to install and remove. Do you have any experience with them in any load bearing / under stress use cases? I don't know how durable they are/aren't under load or stress.
Another thing to consider is accuracy of stated capacities. While cubic inches or liters should be standard, not all manufacturers/brands are necessarily created equal in how they report their stated sizes. I think some are conservative, while others can be a bit liberal in their claims.
See if you can get a buddy to walk along with you to try to isolate the source of the squeak. Could be something as simple as a buckle where a thin pass of lubricant might solve it. While in the field I've gotten rid of annoying squeaks with a one-pass of chapstick as a temporary fix. If its in...
What time of year? This makes a big difference in answering your question for overall size needed. Winter bags and heavier/extra layers eat up cubic volume really quickly for colder weather hunts. If warmer, can go smaller. As other note, you can always make a big bag smaller, but you can't make...
@flyfisher117 if you're using with binos I don't think you'd be disappointed. Just be mindful of placement and ergonomics of the control arm since the Befree is really designed to be a video head; you may find it awkward with binos, but you can overcome it or, like above, cut down the arm. My...
@flyfisher117 Like with anything just run through your pro-con list if considering the Manfrotto Befree. I wanted a compact setup when I'm backpack hunting and it fit the bill. I've got frankly too many tripods and heads in my kit, but mostly for photography. Does it stack up to my 85mm on a...
I've got a Manfrotto Befree live fluid video head on my small carbon fiber backpacking tripod. It's under 1# and handles an 85mm spotter respectably well for the size/weight/pricepoint. Just have to be smart with in use and expected conditions, but that's more about the tripod than it is the...
It really depends on your pack and belt setup/options and anatomy. I put 32oz Nalgenes with Humangear Cap Caps on both sides of the belt, tucked in the rearmost position possible. Will your arms still hit them when walking? Sometimes. I don't notice it other than when navigating through...
I've used one of two different style belts when in the field with my pack. As others have mentioned, the Marsupial Gear belt is good. It's best features are the ability to quickly undue and its slight bit of stretch. The other belt I used before getting the Marsupial belt—and still utilize—is a...
Ran across this old thread. Ditto @Pronghunter. I’ve used the Promaster 525C with an 85mm spotter for a number of years and it performs just fine. I bought a smaller Manfrotto pan head for it as I prefer a pan head for my spotter vs. the factory ball head. I most typically use it while seated...
Thanks for sharing @Kentucky. "Very minimal permanent modification" is right! Keep us apprised of how that setup handles a load (weight bearing, any barreling, etc.). I've never had the HPG Prairie Belt to know how it works but have liked the design and customizability in terms of options for...
@madcalfe Really intrigued by your solution here, thanks for sharing. I may consider this for reviving a Kifaru belt that's compressed and gotten tired. Curious how you navigated the stitching where I believed it to be sewn through the foam in several places. Just use a seam ripper and then have...
Pieces of information shared recently included that the new Kifaru belts will be compatible with the Duplex along with a resizing to better accommodate those of us in-betweeners. They won't be available initially. High hopes this comes sooner than later as I need a couple new belts. Of current...
@deadwolf I couldn't agree with this more. Don't forget durability in this conversation, too. Some stated "low weight" pack doesn't do much good if there's a failure.
I have a former daypack that I used to love. It was a higher-end brand that will remain nameless. It was a great pack...right up...
