    DIY backpack and frame

Pack looks great! CPP (co polymer polyethylene) willgive you a bit more rigidity and durability for frame sheet. And yes, 7075 t6 is the bomb! Excellent design and patterning work!

    Knife making

Yes, made many a blade. Limited forging, mostly stainless and stock removal. Look up Knife and Gun for materials and pops supply or true grit for belts and consumables. Don’t know if they are still around, but Sheffield supply had the highest quality budget steels (no powder steels) for a long...

DIY XPAC backpack bag build (w/pictures)

Just finished sewing up another backpack bag and thought I’d share some photos. Fabric is XPAC 42 and it fits in an external frame. Went with aquaguard zippers to compliment the waterproof XPAC fabric. It’s definitely not submersible, but it’s highly water repellant so I don’t need a rain cover...

    Dyneema or Paracord?

@IowaNative look up halibut gangion. Zero stretch, double braid sheath, holds knots exceptionally well and it’s inexpensive. Been using it for well over a decade and had zero issues. The lighter wt. is fine for most everything in camp. If you want to hang a 150lb moose quarter I’d go with the...

    Anything compare to a Barney’s

@Steve O Have been using Barney’s frames for over 15 years. Tough as nails and nothing really compares with load hauling ability of that frame! Put a WrangellGear bag on it and you have wicked good setup!

    Citric acid powder : Water….

Been using citric acid or vinegar in a spray bottle for a long time. I put maybe 1/2 cup crystals into a spray bottle that is .75 liters or so and spray it on the quarters, ribs, back strap and neck meat after they are hung. I’ll do this a couple times depending on how clean the butchering job...

    Backpacks and Horses

Have hunted a fair bit with horses so I’ll chime in. Use your pommel and saddle bags for the gear you need for the day. Put you empty pack in a top pack on your packhorse. Putting weight up high by wearing a backpack while riding will make you and your horses life more difficult. If you get...

    Mountain Goat Recovery Mission

Thanks for clarifying your thought process. I would say that the sentiment of not doing something that you are not skilled/knowledgeable in is pretty universal. That being said, for the folks that are avid climbers/mountaineers/high angle rescue types, etc and hunt, what gear have you brought...

What is “wrong” with using a mountaineering setup? Can you expound on why you believe it is a bad idea?

    Mountain Goat Recovery Mission

Who here has had to do a technical goat/sheep recovery? Talking full on ropes, harnesses, haul systems, etc. How’d it turn out? What’s the story?

Mount Kifaru pack on Barney's/Frontier Gear frame

@kwackkillncrew the alps bags are a good budget option. The Wrangell gear bag cinches down even better than the Barney’s.

    Best fabric for backpack?

I’ve have seen several packs from the vx-42. I wouldn’t call it especially quiet, but it’s not bad. Take a look at the uhmwpe venom fabric from Ripstop by the roll. Also, the polyester/dyneema fabric with a pu coating is probably the quietest of these three, but not as waterproof. The venom...

    Foot pain

Look up Morton’s Neuroma. Keep in mind you are strengthening you muscles and ligaments/tendons. Muscles grow stronger/repair fairly quickly whereas ligaments/tendons take longer to condition. Something to consider.

    Snowshoe Recommendations

Depends on what you want to use then for. If you are on flat terrain, then lots of options are decent. I know a lot of folks that use the Yukon Charlie’s and they love them. Keep in mind that the tubbs snowshoes have a plastic deck as opposed to a hypalon rubber fabric decking so they are prone...
