If I could only take one it would be the Benchmade Steep Country. I own two of the original versions but either model will do you just fine. S30V steel holds a great edge and the knife works great for camp chores or making kindling if need be. I haven't run into any problems breaking down...
When it comes to quartering a mule deer buck or white tail buck in the field do you bring an extra knife to deal with the tarsal glands? Is there a way to work around them and cut them free from the legs without getting that stink on the blade?
I typically have one do it all knife and an extra...
For the type of hunting I typically do I will most likely use the gutless method on a deer/elk and then pack them out. However I would still like to be proficient in gutting a deer or elk for certain situations.
When it comes to bucks I understand how to gut them and have done it before, but...
Thank you for the tips! I will definitely be taking some extra dry gear for when ive stopped because i sweat a good amount, an extra dry beanie would have been great last season. Nice to hear your opinion on baselayers because I've always gone 250g merino for most cold weather situations and...
Hey Rufus, thanks for taking the time to read through my post. Glad to hear your also working on your setup. From what I've learned being comfortable and warm out there only helps me hunt harder as well as stay safer from serious threats like hypothermia.
On average I would say most mornings we...
This last rifle season in Montana was an eye opener for my friend and I in many ways. Opening day we were geeted at the trailhead by snow, sleet, rain and a heavy layer of fog covering most of the mountains. That low 30° morning was just a glimpse of what the rest of the season held for us...
Hey everyone, this will be my 3rd season archery hunting in my home state of Montana. I learned a lot about hunting my first two seasons but never managed to lay eyes on any elk. Earlier this week though I was leaving an area I was shooting my broadheads at and seen a bull elk run off the road...
Thank you for the advice ill put it to practice next time I'm at the range. Did also want to mention that I added a stock pack to my rifle a few months back to help build my cheek weld. It has helped immensely and seems to be at the correct height for a majority of the times I've been shooting...
That sounds very similar to what I had going on. When I would set up to take a shot I did feel like my right arm was sitting funny and it caused a bit of torche in my elbow and wrist. The recoil also seemed to concentrate high on my shoulder next to the socket which typically hasn't been a...
Im not completely new to rifles but I bought my first bigger caliber rifle (.270win) about 10 months ago and have been going to the range on and off to practice marksmanship and learn to manage recoil. Other than a little muzzle jump I'm still learning to control, the recoil hasn't been a...
Thanks for the knowledge everyone, this forum is really helpful. What do you guys recommend for good fixed blade broadheads? I've been debating between two and three blades, but the 3 blade designs don't seem like you can get them as sharp as a 2 blade. I have some G5 Montecs and the blade angle...
Looking to bow hunt elk this next season and I'm curious if my setup is capable to taking an elk efficiently. I'm shooting a Hoyt Powermax bow at 60# and 27.5in draw length with 340 spine Easton axis arrows cut at 27.25 Inches long with a 75 grain insert. Total arrow weight is 460gn FOC is 16%
Thank you for making this post, I've been looking everywhere for opinions on the new Steep Country. For some reason I could not get on board with the overall look of the new design. Better jimping was a great move but the updated blade shape isn't as appealing and looks too big IMO.
