    Pro/Anti-Hunting List?

I think the biggest thing people need to do is understand the issue when they see a company labeled as anti-gun or anti-hunting. (They are not the same thing.) Companies like Dick's Sporting Goods who built their business on the dollars of hunters and fisherman and then not only stopped selling...

Any experience with "Western Outdoor Adventures"?

*UPDATED THREAD TITLE" The actual outfitter name is Western Outdoor Adventures. A couple friends of mine are booking an unguided private land hunt with them. Supposedly 5 day DIY on a private ranch with provided wall tents for lodging. I'm on the fence. I'd like to take the trip with my...

    What would you (really) do?

There is no lonelier feeling then holding the back leg of a freshly killed bull elk in one hand and a tiny Havalon knife in the other as darkness falls. If you’ve been there you know how much a helping hand is worth.

    What would you (really) do?

I don't have to read any of the replies. I'm all in. Let's find that bull and get him cut up and packed out! I've ended many a day early to help a complete stranger with the task of extricating big game.

    Christensen Arms Modern Hunting Rifle

The price is a non-starter for me. It is definitely approaching custom build price. The custom builder up the road from me warned me about CA quality issues and I should have listened. My Mesa is a shooter since it made a trip back to Gunnison but I doubt I'd buy another CA. Certainly not for...

    Camper vs Tent?

We tent camped for 15 years and then moved to a small motorhome which is even more expensive than a trailer. I can't tell you the last time we stayed in a hotel room. It is very nice to have your own clean bathroom and kitchen and not have to eat out. Over the years, I've learned to fix almost...

    Fenix 5X accuracy

I've had my 5x for about 2 years. I got mine because I am a runner and triathlete and also use the nav functions for hunting. Accuracy for most things is pretty good. The altimeter . . meh. Not so much. We have a small ranch-style house and I usually hit my step goal by 8:00am. LOL! Wrist-based...

Deciding to pay off house with retirement savings...

Well . . it's a lot better idea than investing your retirement savings in deer hunting. I only know one guy that worked out for.

Rinella DDD - Depublicize, Deglorify, Demonetize

I don't feel like it's necessary to dump good equipment. It is certainly useful and helpful to have good, solid warm clothing, etc. What probably isn't necessary in all walks of outdoor life is the outdoor "lifestyle brand". Biggest bunch of BS I've ever seen although I can't fault the companies...

Rinella DDD - Depublicize, Deglorify, Demonetize

Agree . . but there is a big difference between getting young people out hunting and taking a young person out on a game-rich bit of private land, propping them up behind a gun and having them snipe a big buck over bait and telling them they are a hunter.

Rinella DDD - Depublicize, Deglorify, Demonetize

More like only the last 15-20 years. Oddly, since the advent and popularity of social media.

Rinella DDD - Depublicize, Deglorify, Demonetize

I'm sure it won't be popular, but I kind of support this completely. I think 95% of Outdoors TV shows, and the Instragrams queens who get propped in front of the camera to pose with a giant buck they "hunted" have done far more to hurt hunting than anything.

    Saddle Hunting Lightweight... Huh?

Honestly I just don't get the whole appeal of saddles. It just seems to me to be the latest, trendy gimmick to separate hunters from their money. Right up there with commercial ground blinds. (Buy a tent and brush it in. Why not just use the brush?) Saddles to me look uncomfortable, and require...

    Suggestions for a hunt?

That isn't a bad idea. It might be a little spendy for the ferry but you'd get your meat home easily.

    Suggestions for a hunt?

The nice thing about Newfoundland vs. the Yukon, etc. is that you will surely bring home all the meat. Many of the outfitters in the remote parts of Canada and Alaska donate it to the locals because it is too expensive for hunters to get it home. And thank you for the kind words. I usually...

    Suggestions for a hunt?

Fingers crossed for you Newfoundland hunt. I hope you can make it. I went a couple years ago and it was an awesome experience. I know YouTube'ing life is the big trend these days but I did a bit of writing about my experience. I really hope you get to go.
