NF NX8 vs updated Mavens (1.2/3.2)

I can’t really say on the maven glass as I’ve only seen it inside looking at 75 yards or less. Until I use it at last light or on a mirage heavy summer day past 700 yards I won’t say. Realistically there isn’t a $1,000+ scope where glass quality is a true limitation.

NF NX8 vs updated Mavens (1.2/3.2)

I’ve used an NX8 for 3 years and I’ve played with the RS1.2 at and outdoor show and would have bought one on the spot if the had the all black Mil version in stock that day. The RS1.2 has one of, if not the best FFP reticle right now and it has shown drop test promise. The NX8 has more top end...

    Budget Friendly O/U 20

The CZ O/U’s made by Huglu are probably the best mechanically of the Turkish imports but anything below a Citori or Beretta 686 is a well know mechanical liability and will have a short life span as far as round count goes. Anyone spending under $1k on an O/U would almost always be better...

    Dedicated sporting clays gun

You can get a basic Beretta 694 Sporting for just over $4k if you look around. That would be my suggestion.

    8x as Primary Glassing Optic?

I ran mid tier 10x and 15x56 SLC’s for a season until I could afford better 10’s. That meant I had the best glassing tool possible and something less to scan with freehand and while moving. In retrospect I should have gotten good 8x/10x binoculars first because that’s the used every time tool...

    Swarovski Z5

They are a light scope with a nearly perfect form factor and great glass but they are very fragile.

WY Opener Dates - need to be there on the opener?

I’ve hunted openers and I’ve hunted later in the season and I’ll just say it’s different. I think the obvious bucks get killed on the opener, mostly the bucks living near a drivable blm road. I think a fair number of bigger bucks survive because they hang out in hidey holes or on the edge of...

    Mechanicals for Turkeys?

Yes I’ve used that setup with NAP gobbler getters and they open just fine.

    Hunting Public Land

It depends where you are. Public land turkey pressure is quite a bit higher in the Southeast than the Great Plains. As such, the difference from private land turkey hunting is a spectrum. The only main difference with public land turkeys is that a loud fired up bird is not a good thing because...

    First Shotgun Question

I would stay away from anything Remington at this point because anything they have made 2006- present is pretty terrible quality. The 11-87 is a 1987 rework of Remington 1100’s from the 1960’s to be make to shoot 2.75 or 3” shells without swapping the barrel. As far as modern working...

    Arken EPL-4 4-16x44mm Q&A

Because scopes are not Isotropic mechanisms. The forces are acting in different axis and the durability varies greatly between each axis. If recoil runs along the X-axis, lots of vibration and impacts act upon the Y and Z Axis (Turrets, parallax). Think about a Coke can. You can stand on it...

Who sells barelled actions on defiance receivers?

I’ve bought from Altus and everything from them has been great. They have done some gunsmithing work and the turn around was a few days. Bugholes is well regarded by all means though their focus is more on competition barrels and less on hunting. Before defiance when completely upside down I...

Trying to build out G20 gen 5 everything rig. Razco?

I would really look at Gunfighters INC Kenai or Binolink holsters for a G20 and bino harness or alone. A GFI Kenai under a chest rig has been my solution for quite some time and their new binolink system looks to improve it further. Gunfighters Inc is the best kydex manufacturer I have ever...

    Gear Storage Ideas

This is a multi pronged approach but these are ways I manage storage of my hunting gear. 1) Garage gear loft- these are great for bulky seasonal items like ground blinds, decoys, coolers. This is basically free space. If you ever live in a small apartment you will start to focus on 3...

Browning x bolt any mark downs?

For what it’s worth Browning doesn’t typically have their January shot show announced models available until late fall. It maybe the second half of the year before they announce price drops or rebates.

    Planning public land pheasants

My experience is that Kansas is really only worth pheasant hunting at peak years every decade or so and meanwhile everyone I know who is serious about pheasants goes to SD or ND annually. If you are already making a big drive just go another 6 hours to get to the best opportunities. It’s...

Elk Hunting/ Family Camping Tent Suggestions?

I use an MSR habitude 6 as my crossover elk base camp family tent. It worked fine for 3 guys during a miserably snowy/cold Wyoming hunt and works for the family the rest of the year. I’ve run a Mr. buddy heater in it and no one has died of carbon monoxide poisoning yet**** It’s a lot different...

    Rifle rack

I have a Wilton 4” vise with magnetic plastic soft jaws that have cutouts for barrels and various firearms shapes. I use that a lot for gun and other projects. I also have a Tipton ultra vise which is functional but kind of overdone while being somewhat cheaply made. It’s one of the better...
