    Wyoming 120 - Cow Elk

Finally drew my first elk tag after years of trying. It's a type 6 cow elk tag in Wyoming unit 120. I spoke with a biologist in the area earlier this week and got some great insight on where to look for herds of elk and even some info on trespass fees/private land access. My one concern is that...

Where should I start building points for me and my son?

Thanks for all the feedback. Sounds like you all saved me a lot of time researching. I love the idea of putting money back in a separate account to take him on a big hunt. Sorry for my lack of knowledge here, but is the landowner tag something that you usually purchase through an outfitter or...

Where should I start building points for me and my son?

Yes, this will be my 2nd season hunting elk and I actually started chasing them now for those very reasons. I am hoping by the time he is old enough to start going with me I'll have some spots to take him and enough knowledge to pass along to give him a jump start.

Where should I start building points for me and my son?

Starting to do some research on where might be a great state/unit destination for me and my son to go on an elk hunt together down the road. He is only 4 years old so I am talking about one of those tags that takes 10+ years to draw. I have always been told Utah would be a great destination but...

    BLM worth hunting?

Great looking animals! Congrats on all the success! We deal with Rattlesnakes here in the Ozark Mountains but I definitely wouldn't call it infested.

    BLM worth hunting?

You're making me feel like there is still hope yet. Greatly appreciated!

    BLM worth hunting?

Good to know! I noticed a lot of the BLM I am looking at doesn't have elevations over 8,500 - 9,000 feet. Have you had any luck finding elk in those types of areas in September?

CO Refund or Roll the Dice

Just an update, I mailed in my tag yesterday for a refund. Now the e-scouting starts all over from scratch. Have 3 weeks to get my OTC archery elk hunt in Colorado planned. I'll go start a new post now asking for coordinates to all of your best public land, OTC unit, honey holes. ;)

    BLM worth hunting?

Like a lot of folks I am scrambling to come up with a new plan for hunting elk this year in Colorado after mailing my tag in yesterday for a refund due to the wildfires. As I sit down to start my e-scouting over from scratch I am trying to look at new areas. Last year was my 1st year elk hunting...

CO Refund or Roll the Dice

Looks like there was a fire near the specific area I've scouted in 2012 but I do see an area north of there near the Wyoming border that burned in 2018.

CO Refund or Roll the Dice

Also, just wanted to say Thank You to everyone for all the advice. This being my 2nd season elk hunting and my first time drawing a tag I am really torn on what to try and do. I'd love to take advantage of the opportunity at some concentrated elk herds with limited competition but have never had...

CO Refund or Roll the Dice

This was my biggest question. Most of my e-scouting was done in areas away from the fire itself but just inside the closure boundary. I wasn't sure if there was still any chance of areas being opened up in a month.

CO Refund or Roll the Dice

Thanks so much for the info. Yes I should have been more specific. I know 19 is affected but I see there are still some areas in that unit that haven't been closed off yet. You're right, one of the sections I had been e-scouting is marked as Wilderness but is inside the Unit 19 boundary.

CO Refund or Roll the Dice

My tag is also good for units 19 and 191 which are outside the closure area. Is anyone familiar with the access to the wilderness areas in these units. Should those roads remain open?

CO Refund or Roll the Dice

For those of you whose limited draw tag is affected by the CO fires, are you getting your refund or rolling the dice that you will have some ground available to hunt? We weren't planning on heading out there until the last week of September. Trying to decide if there will be enough ground open...

How many years before you got your first bull?

Wow! I won't be setting my bar that high. Although I am hoping the fact that I drew a tag this year in Colorado will help improve my odds. Definitely has to be less people than I saw last year in the OTC unit. I see you're from Colorado. If you have any insight into GMU's 7,8.9,19 or 191? I'm a...

How many years before you got your first bull?

If I could put together some missed opportunities on this trip I would consider that progress and a win for my 2nd elk hunt

How many years before you got your first bull?

Love that advice. I have a 4 year old and am already dreaming about our future elk hunts. Great job getting your son involved!

How many years before you got your first bull?

Could you elaborate on #1 there? Do you mean always make a move to cut an elk off not follow behind them?
