Montana Big Game Combo Hunt- Is it feasible?

This!! It’s possible, but the quality may suffer if you aren’t picky about what you shoot.

ANOTHER stolen bull…this time Aron Snyders?

I can’t believe someone would have the cojones to walk on someone’s property and steal a head to begin with. I left a 360” bull hanging on my fence to dry for a week and never thought about someone around here stealing it.

Mine still doesn’t work where I purchased it in 2020. It wants me to pay a subscription. Got any tips to restore it?

    Herd Bull Tactics

Being an East Coast guy that has been traveling West since 1984 I only have a couple weeks to hunt them. From my experience I don’t think there is a go to tactic for me. I find that each bull can be different, some will grab their cow/cows and try to put as much distance between himself and...

Anyone “Not” want to draw the Montana LE elk tag?

I remember back in the day when that archery tag was unlimited for resident and NR as long as it was your only choice. It could get crowded, but the hunting was phenomenal! Everything really started to change in or around 2008 when they had an unlimited youth rifle season and things have never...

Anyone “Not” want to draw the Montana LE elk tag?

I agree that it probably needed to happen as it should open up a lot more opportunity for better hunts in these areas. Example 2020 we pull a Breaks tag, find good bulls for the first few days and between the rain and internet hunters we couldn’t get it done. We leave to hunt a general area we...

Anyone “Not” want to draw the Montana LE elk tag?

With the new regulation changes, was there anyone else who was up in the air about putting in for any LE units? I know in years past we could draw the tag, hunt the unit a few days and if things weren’t panning out, bounce to another area to chase bulls then come back if we wanted in hopes...

    Official Montana 2022 draw thread!

Actually 799-20 does say 1st choice only in the regs. Great bull in your profile! Good luck this season!

    Official Montana 2022 draw thread!

I totally agree and I’m sure it confused a few applicants when it says “1st choice only”, but I read it to mean “1st and only choice” as in years past. I guess after applying/hunting out there for 25+ years as a NR you get ingrained. If anyone didn’t draw those units who got kicked out and...

    Official Montana 2022 draw thread!

Pretty sure most of them were putting in for 410 on the south side not the 600’s on the north side where the survey took place. Thanks for posting though, interesting read.

    Official Montana 2022 draw thread!

Won’t take you up on that one, but with the rule changes on LE areas I can’t believe so many people would even put in for a LE unless it’s a 380 tag. I hope everyone of them can fill their tags with a good bull in the Breaks!

    YOUR success rate on elk.

I started bow hunting elk in 1984, I have managed to make it out west from the east coast 26 times. 19 Bulls harvested with a bow all diy public land. Skunked the first 3 years, didn’t have a clue what I was doing and no one to teach me or YouTube videos to watch back then, but I knew it was...

    Height and weight

55 years old, I work out 5 days a week. 5’-11” and weigh 165 year round. I try to put about 10 pounds on starting 3 weeks prior to elk camp. Last year I returned weighing 157 after 13 hard days of hunting.

    Tough Season? Or just me?

Toughest year I’ve seen in quite some time hunting Montana. It was so dry the dirt made noise, as crowded as I’ve ever seen it, smoke made visibility low, elk were not talking and a lot of miles put in to find them. It took me 8 days to get my mule deer and 13 days to get my elk. Usually I can...

Elk Basecamp Gear you must have

A boot dryer! No matter how waterproof your boots are, after several days of hunting in rain they are going to be damp inside.
