Back in the any ram days it was a big deal to shoot a full curl ram. Nowadays if a guy shoots a 7 or 8 yo ram just at full curl he gets frowned upon cuz he shot a dink that is barely legal. Barely legal is still legal. A 50 or 50.5 inch bull in a spike/fork/fifty area is also "barely legal" but...
240 gr xtp mag max load 1900+fps. Hit this ram at 71yds. Flipped him over backwards. I’ve shot rams with my 325wsm that didn’t go down that quick. The 454 at max loads is one straight wall pistol round with enough velocity to expand a hp bullet on game. I recovered the bullet under the far side...
My FA83 454 4x leupold moose hunting load and how I shoot off the bench. POA/POI is consistent shooting off hand, kneeling etc. resting the barrel, and butt on bags will result in a different POI from various field positions.
And of course there is the Freedom Arms Model 2008 single shot.
A few years ago Bob Baker from FA came here to AK for a moose hunt with it with a 45/70 barrel. He killed a beast of a bull with it. A good friend of mine and member here Bob Robertson was with him on that hunt.
Of course FA has...
For revolvers when it comes to performance you can’t beat a Freedom Arms. The metal, the heat treating, the tight tolerances, etc. cylinders, throats, cylinder gap. All add up to performance and accuracy. In the 454 it is a 60,000 psi cartridge. That is up there with rifle pressures. And can...
How far is long range? For hunting or ringing steel? Bench rested or field hunting positions?
Have you ever shot a pistol with a scope? Anything above 2x greatly magnifies wiggle even rested. I have a 4x on my Freedom Arms 454. It takes a lot of practice to be consistently accurate getting used...
Not gonna happen. Interstate Commerce Law. AK could require that the Guide accompany the client in the field not an Assistant. Leave the assistant at camp cooking or accompanying the Guide and hunter as a packer. But that won’t happen. The state will continue to sell an unlimited number of NR...
Have a great time. Soak in every moment of every moment in the Sheep Mountains. Before you know it you'll be on the plane headed back home.
Take some anti-diahrea and anti-nausea meds. If you get the squirts from either end and can't get a handle on it your hunt will be over.
Band aides, gauze, duct tape, etc. for cuts. blah blah... the usual.. Knowledge and a SPOT or InReach
RX Anti-nausea if you can get it and OTC anti-diarhea.
If you get the squirts from both ends and can't hydrate your hunts over.
Mine have saved two different partners on two different hunts.
Very in depth long article. I've waded through most of it. Bottom line is they now figure there are a lot more Golden Eagles in AK than they thought.

"By extrapolating across the species' nesting range in Alaska (1,180,489 km2) and incorporating published productivity and...
Yup....
And then there are the Coyotes and the ones we can't touch.... Golden Eagles.
"Eagles and coyotes are the primary predators of Dall sheep lambs..."

These few "Guide Only" tags are a mere snowflake in the wind compared to the fact that Alaska sells an unlimited number of over the counter guide required non-resident sheep tags annually.
AK splits up the available tags between residents and non residents. These two tags (1 each area) are for non resident hunters only to apply for. DS232 the same hunt for residents is DS231, 6 tags available. DS241 24 tags for residents.
I can't imagine trying to take a leak in a ziplock or a bottle. Tried the bottle one time. Much easier (and safer!) to crawl outside. It's not like a guy is at 20,000ft on Everest!
