    Lightweight / Crossover Trail Boot

Anybody have a good recommendation on lightweight boots for September? I'm talking almost a trail running style high-top boot like the Hoka GTX pictured below. I have the Hoka boot pictures and have been wearing it this spring but am beginning to wonder how this will hold up in the elk...

    Windy Days

How does rain affect affect their behavior? The one rainy day observation I have made so far is that they didn't bugle like the morning before, and they went into their bedding areas sooner. Do elk also hunker down during rainy days?

    Windy Days

Great nuggets in here. It just got me thinking last year when I was up high... I hated going over saddles or large meadows where the wind was howling. If I didn't like it, I could only assume the elk would also dislike it with their #1 defense mechanism being neutralized.

    Windy Days

looked up windy days topics on the thread history but not really finding the info I am looking for... Do elk change their behavior on windy days? I'm talking 20+mph winds all day. For instance, if they routinely hit an open meadow on a hillside, will the wind affect whether or not they decide...

Toprut No Longer Hosting Google Earth/KMZ Files

Bummer that @onX Hunt removed TopRut maps. Luckily downloaded quite a few in the areas I hunt, but these were a great resource for trying to learn new units. Not everything needs to be commercialized....

    Campers?

Campers will limit mobility as well keep in mind. It'll be more work to pick up and move if you aren't getting into any elk. Check out the Enzy overland style cargo trailers. The build outs on those are pretty sweet. https://www.enzycampers.com/

    Mountain nutrition

Where do you get your powdered MCT? Been looking for this but is darn expensive everywhere I look. Why add MCT and coconut oil powder ? Just trying to get more healthy fat calories?... I will take a guess that you have no issues with bloating!! MCT has me running to the toilet usually! when...

    OTC Honey Holes

Couple of questions for the guys getting it done every year in OTC units. How long did it take you to find "honey holes"? Did you "Accidentally" stumble upon them while hunting? Or were you intentional on being in the area with e-scouting, etc? Do they produce every year? If so, are elk...

    Elk Game Camera Strategy?

Nice looking bulls! Are you moving these cameras from year to year? Or do you find the elk tend to stay close to the same areas using the same game trails and meadows year after year?

    Elk Game Camera Strategy?

Had a pretty good hunt this year in a few different archery OTC areas. A few of these areas were new to me, and some other I had hunted in during previous seasons. Re-visiting some of these places got me thinking about game cameras and if they would be beneficial. I have never used game...

    New Food Ideas Needed !!

I like mixing the Costco salted almonds in with their cashew clusters. Man those are good. Plus it replenishes salt you're losing from being on the move all day. favorite new meal I added last year was vac sealed raw oats, dried blueberries, shredded coconuts, dried cranberries, walnuts, and...

    Finding elk rutting areas?

couldn't agree more with these comments. You'll walk into an area and know it when you've found it. Generally if you found a rut hot spot you won't be questioning - "I wonder if they've been using this area"... it'll be very obvious if you are in their bedroom during the rut with smell, visual...

    Colorado OTC Units

I used to believe it was important to get back as far as possible. After following a few members thoughts on this topic over the past few years, I have changed my mind almost entirely. You just have to put a little thought into where the crowds will push the elk. Be willing to hike 3/4 of a mile...

Backcountry camping. Do you worry about black bears?

lot of people on here saying don't worry about it. Yes, it is "just" a black bear, but It only takes one growly bear with the wrong attitude for you to regret not taking the extra 2 minutes to hang food. just my .02
