I’m very novice to Montana, hunted region 7 in 2018, and 2023. Killed a young 4x4 first trip with Archery, doubled up with two mature bucks with my dad with rifle in 23. Weather and broken heater on our camper pushed us out 3 days earlier than planned. I felt pretty confident that in our group...
Does it check every box though? One of his criteria is a good amount of factory offerings with accessibility. You can walk into any store that sells ammunition (bass pro, academy, Walmart, pawn shops, etc) and find .243 ammo. But that won’t be the case for 6mm ARC
The issue is he has a specific criteria he wants to meet, low recoiling round, wood stock bolt action, with lots of factory offerings, and everyone is suggesting wild cat cartridges that have minimal factory offerings. He wants a plane Jane wood stocked low recoiling hunting set up that he can...
I have a savage model 11 in 243 and with the Burris veracity scope and the steel rings it weighs almost 8.5 pounds. I can tell you that the recoil in that set up is very minimum. I shoot 95gr sst and 100gr interlocks out of it. If you had a .243 in that 8lb range and shot something like Barnes...
Guns are are like vehicles. Find the one that catches your eye, meets your needs, and drives the way you think it should drive. I don’t own any Howa/vanguard rifles, but I’ve always liked the looks and feel of them. I think their sporters are very nice looking guns. Browning medallions and...
Go buy you a Weatherby Vanguard sporter in .243. It will be 8lbs after you scope it. With the walnut stock, 22” barrel and weight of the gun, recoil will be a non factor. Shoot 100gr loads and deer will die. You’re gonna get millions of 6mm answers and 223, but with your parameters the .243 win...
With big game being subjective, i do 90% of my deer hunting with a .243. I’ve shot whitetail and hog with it. The results of those shots have all been pretty boring results. I shoot them in the vitals, they run 20-60 yards and die. I’ve had the same exact results with 308, 30-06, 30-30, muzzle...
I wanted a medium weight pant for hunting, i was set on the Kuiu encounter pants with the leg zipper for easy on off and hip vents. Then i seen Black Ovis come out with these pants and liked what i seen. Was waiting on sales to buy some but some Kings camo XKG lone peak pants popped up on Midway...
Yeah they definitely expand. The 95gr combo has worked well for me. My 30-30 shooting 150gr power points leaves a gnarly hole. I think the lower velocity plus soft bullet just match well and it’ll knock the plug out a deer.
I’m a .243 fan and i understand some of the gripes about it. The 95gr SST is what my gun favors. It’ll clover leaf them at 100 yards, and 1” at 200, that’s the best of my abilities. The SST’s are a violent round at higher velocities, I always had a hint of concern about shooting them for that...
As mentioned above. Unless you just want copper for other reasons, there’s nothing wrong with traditional lead cup and core bullets. The 30-06 velocities are within the range of lead bullets being extremely beneficial. Fast enough to hit like a hammer, but not to fast the bullet won’t hold up...
Savage makes tons of left handed options and are easy accurate shooters. Just have to have some thick skin from the cooler crowd that carry plastic stocked rifles from other brands…
I have 2 Burris fullfield E1 scopes. A 3-9x40 and a 4-14x42. For a scope under $200 they are fantastic. Clear class, lightweight, and hold zero. For a budget minded scope I’d recommend 100%. They sit dead even with the leupold freedom line, but cheaper. Leupold has better eye relief, glass...
on those 3 kill photos I dug into the performance of the bullet unlike previous kills with it. The first small buck was 150 yards broadside. Center punched through the lungs. Small entry, and quarter size exit. No bone contacted and there was a fist sized jelly mess in the lungs. It hit a 60...
Man I’m not an reloader or ballistic expert or anything, i just shoot box ammo. You’ll notice reading that the people who love the SST’s normally shoot heavy for Caliber and are shooting “slower” cartridges. The guys that say they grenade are generally shooting lighter for caliber or cartridge...
I shoot the factory 95gr SST’s out of my .243. Keep in mind that the SST is a bullet designed for rapid expansion and terminal performance. It doesn’t perform best at high velocities because you’ll get over expansion. They will ruin meat fast if you hit shoulder. If you stay off the shoulder and...
Since you have a 30 cal suppressor already, why not go with a .308? Tons of ammo available and lots of gun options with a threaded barrel. You get a lightweight bolt set up, or build you a fun AR-10 platform.
I don’t have anything against 6mm, i hunt with my .243 the majority of the time. I’m just looking to fill a void in my caliber range that I can use for deer and possibly elk and still be kid friendly. I see tons of people recommending the 7-08 and 6.5 for kids, so I’m just trying to get a feel...
What is recoil like between the 2? I’ve shot a 7mm-08 a few times, but have never fired a 6.5 cm. I’m not the best at judging recoil because I’m not a small guy. I can just remember the 7mm-08 as being a snappy recoil.
