    P. Your Mitutoyo caliper is a good tool. There is a "feel" that one must develop in using precision measuring tools. Your caliper is especially susceptible to feel and measurements can be skewed by variations in pressure applied. It takes some practice.

    On the Swarovski side by side binocular, I believe the main reason for using the variable eyepiece is that the 30X eyepieces are no longer made. Occasionally a 30x appears on ebay. For optical sharpness the fixed power eyepiece is superior to the variable eyepiece.

    Why not more DIY “big eyes”?

    I have not checked on the physical size limitations of : say a 95mm or 115 Swarovski with STX oculars that might prevent their assembly into "binoculars". I'm too old and financially challenged to do it, even if possible. It would be awsome glass though, as would the big Kowas.
