I'm in the no ELD-X camp. Shot a buck a few years ago at 110 yards. Luckily in the heart. Pinhole in, pinhole out. .270 cal. No expansion. Super precise but not what I want in a hunting bullet. Until that point, I was sold on Hornady. They make great ammo, I just won't use that bullet anymore...
Late to this thread and haven't read everything....I'm a rancher from Florida, we have no public land grazing to speak of. Maybe some of the bombing ranges but they come with their own issues.
Are you OK with elk and deer eating ranchers stockpile of winter feed once the snow pushes them out...
Hunt the highest north facing timber that has water within a mile. Use only a cow call and walk up on them. Be above them as the thermals rise or your toast. Good luck!
Chad,
We've all been thru these scenarios. My recommendation is go solo and you'll meet like minded enthusiasts that don't back out next year. That's what we've done. I started solo, now there's a group of us that hunt on our own but together around the same time in the same unit. Someone...
Don't let them scare you! It's never too late to start. Get after it! You'll be glad you did.
#1 Get in shape. Walk /run 3-5 miles a day. Hike with some weight in your pack. Get out there and acclimate. It's generally 1000 ft per day if you're coming from sea-level. Hydrate.
#2. Don't go on a...
Rough season this year in south central Colorado, got pounded with 28" of snow. Elk went lower and didn't return. After trudging thru snow that was above my knees I decided I need to invest in snowshoes if we have another event like this in the future.
Same place in CO OTC as the last 4 years. I know the area well, and there's plenty of elk. Every year I say I'm going to try something new, then we stay there around 3 weeks. We'll see how thick it is with other hunters this year. To be clear, I welcome everyone to enjoy god's glory in the elk...
I've hunted 81 for the last 4 years. This may be our last if it's as bad as last year. There are elk just like every other OTC unit. However, every year the number of hunters goes up. Plan on hunting in close proximity of other hunters.
Read the MVUM on the Rio Grande NF website so you don't...
A bit off the OP's topic, but I haul an old horse trailer out west when we go elk hunting. I mounted 4 100w panels on the roof(you can barely see them in the pic). Attached 2 deep cycle batteries to a 2000w inverter. Run a 9.0 cu ft freezer in the trailer to bring food into the back...

This isn't not meant to incite any hate, I love all you fellow roksliders. Can't wait for elk season. I think everyone can agree mountain air does a body good. I attached the above article to show the pivot...
