Good to hear. I'm a bit on the deaf side so I sometimes wonder if I'm not hearing far-off responses. Interesting about those bulls...that pretty much says it all for me.
The timeline you mention about the past 3 years is pretty much dead on. The last "great" year I had in the Swan was 2019, and that was after about 7 years in a row that delivered really good action. The past 3 years it has gotten progressively worse. I cannot believe the lack of sign in some...
I heard bugles on opening day down the Swan. I haven't heard a single bugle since and I've been out in the field at least 9 different mornings or evenings in the same general area. Not a good year so far for me. Hope others are getting some action.
I didn't read every response to your original post...so may be repeating...I have had some good success with decoys when the situation to actually set it up was present.
BUT, if you get a decoy get the BUTT decoy. I had issues with decoys with a 'head' looking at the bull (or the 2D plane that...
First, consider yourself lucky that continues to bugle at you broadcasting his position. Congrats.
My take? Close the gap silently when you can as many have said before, but if you feel things going stale, instead of bugling as you had already been doing, go and find a big stick and rake and...
Was in the Swan hunting yesterday afternoon/evening. Checked my cams and had small groups of 2-3 cows visiting the past 3 afternoons/evenings...no bulls. Surprising this late in the game.
Thanks for posting your experience goodgrouper. I was planning to sneak out to one of my spots in the Swans this afternoon hoping there may actually be a little action brewing. I'm a little more excited to go now.
I was out yesterday afternoon into the evening in the Swan. Checked a couple of cams, and had a lone mature bull show up recently - no cows. Did some post-dark bugling on my hike back out. I was sure with the light rain, overall darkness from deep overcast in the mountains, etc. that I would...
Hunted in the Swan this am. Looks like the fun finally arrived...
No bugling going on until I ripped a lip bawl at 8am and 3 bulls didn't stop for 2.5 hours. Cow calls would shut them up though...so I would have to restart them with a lip bawl and the chorus started all over again. Wind was...
Almost a month old to post...managed to get a modest 6x6 on opening weekend of Montana rifle season. As always, glad to have elk meat in the freezer and antlers to boot, especially after the many hard days and close opportunities blown by the fickle winds I experienced during archery season...
'Rut' places do not necessarily mean the elk are there during rifle season. MT rifle opener usually lands around the occurrence 2nd rut cycle, so they're sometimes still in the 'rut' spot doing their thing on opener, but don't count on them sticking around much after that. Smaller bulls and...
Congratulations - Way to stick with it. Nothing like the feeling of doubt wondering if you actually had a kill shot. I am sure there are plenty of bulls that have gone down unrecovered due to archery hunters throwing in the towel too early.
Couldn't agree more. Think of how the strength of odor on your dog goes from smelling OK to downright impossible to be around when they get wet. Same thing happens to us, whether it be rain/humidity or tons of sweat.
