    Headlamp?

I took the Fenix HM50R V2 (2.75 oz) for its weight, battery life, and the fact that you could recharge it. I also took a Nightcore NU25 (1 oz) as a backup. You may find yourself not even using it that much depending on when you go. This was 10:30 pm on a late night pack out in August...

Picking an area to hunt—which unit is best? (Idaho)

Cyril gave you some great advice. Virtually every zone is going to have elk. IDFG publishes data that tells you which of those have larger concentrations even. I hunted a zone this year that I’ve hunted for just shy of 10 years. We’ve seen elk every year of those 10 years. Sometimes...

    Katabatic Tincup thoughts

I have the newest version from them that released a handful of weeks ago. Excellent quality and construction. One major adjustment they made was a roomier fit and I would say that’s apparent (appropriately so). The other was the shell fabric. It’s competitive with other jackets in its...

    Grinder mushing meat

Update. Sorry for the delay. I was fortunate enough to get another chance to give the grinder the whirl after picking up a new plate and blade (down to the wire on the final day of the season…) Better news: it works! …and I didn’t need the new plate or blade as I found out what was causing...

    Wild game macros?

...and brag you should with fronts like that! Great bull. Our website, newsletter, and all of that jazz will have information on the launch. I'll put it on my radar to circle back to this thread and post a link too if it's helpful to others.

    Wild game macros?

Macros for roasts and steaks will be (per ounce): 30kcal, 0-1g fat, 0g carbohydrate, 7g of protein. With 10%: 50kcal, 2.5-3g fat, 0g of carbs, and 5.5g protein. We’re currently working on a guide as a resource for stuff like this. Congrats on your elk and successful change in lifestyle!

    Altitude help

Now you're on to something... @Runwilderness has a valid point, too. You're not looking for it to "not suck". It'll always suck...that's what makes success so sweet. You're just looking for it to suck less than you may have experienced in previous years/seasons/attempts.

    Altitude help

Get there earlier. There's no shortcut to acclimation. We did a podcast with the good folks at Uphill Athlete on the topic here. (Without knowing more about your training, there's a chance you had some aerobic deficiency syndrome going on, too).

    Tripod head

I moved from a VA-5 to a Weiser Nighthawk. It’s been exceptional for binos and spotters. Clamps well and stays put: the weight savings has been obvious on backpack hunts, too. Mounted on a Slik 624 from @S&S Archery (Rob) .

    Sleeping Bag?

This is speaking more to your question on "what do you use and what does it weight?" vs the SG specifically. I run a mid-temp range quilt (Katabatic Alsek at 23 oz) and bring puffy pants jacket. I lived in the puffy pants on my sheep hunt unless hiking. If the temps dipped too low at night...

    Snack sticks without preservatives

I'd assume you're trying to keep uric acid down if you're referring to keeping gout under control. Purines/high purine diet will generally cause flares there (purines break down to uric acid). Unfortunately the biggest driver of that tends to be high intakes of red meat. Some acids...

    Grinder mushing meat

Quick update so no one feels like their suggestions have been lost on me or gone into thin air- I ordered a new plate and blade from Weston and will attempt it again after elk season. The collar doesn’t seem to bottom. In fact, it’ll get so tight that I can’t (manually) spin the the auger...

    Grinder mushing meat

There's a bushing/gear + screw with washer. All are tight. It's not to say it's not outside of the tolerance needed though. Something like this seems to make the most sense to me, too. I can pick up a plate and blade from Weston for under $30 bucks or so and I like that a heck of alot more...

    Grinder mushing meat

Thanks for the replies, everyone. The meat was in the freezer prior to grinding. I stuck all parts of the grinder in the freezer prior to grinding. This was the first attempt with a sharp blade and plate. Both plate and blade were sharpened via a flat block with 400-600-800 grit. I then...

    Grinder mushing meat

Thanks Jay. Yeah, plate is secure in the notch and everything is as tight as can be between all the mating surfaces.

    Grinder mushing meat

I appreciate the response and you giving it some thought. I'm in the same boat- I can't imagine what would cause it to go from working great to barely making it 5-minutes. I haven't reached out to them beyond scouring their online articles/tutorials for remedies and fixes. I've gone through...

    Grinder mushing meat

I wouldn't put it past me to miss something obvious like that, but yes. I double-checked the blade was oriented right, too.

    Grinder mushing meat

Morning! I have an older Weston #8 that did great on elk and mule deer (1 each per year), but started mushing the meat in the last year. I’ve done all the tricks- tighten the seal between blade/plate/auger closer, sharpened plates & blades to well beyond factory-sharp, frozen the meat ahead...

Shell/topper leak question (try to make it waterproof vs bedroll)

I get a little leaking at the corners, too. I’ve found two options after chasing my tail to “get it water tight.” 1. 3/8-1/2”Foam pads (the workout type from Costco) to go the length of the bed. The width is fine as is. This raises my paid far enough above the bed liner seams that I’m not in...
