Considered a Goshawk with a Merlin? You would have the increased volume and similar layout with the Merlin attached. Only thing you'd really be missing is the tall side pockets, one of which you'd kinda have on the Merlin. The right hand side pocket of the Merlin will just barely swallow my 77mm...
I have very limited use with mine but no regrets so far. Without ever having seen a Saker in the flesh I would guess it may be more awkward to keep compressed into day pack mode when used for breakaway carry. I’m guessing all the compression would have to go around the load back to the frame...
Ouch. That'll teach me for jumping on the wagon too soon. Cipher Brooks optimized for 24" and $15 bucks less than the original Cipher run. :( My Brooks is an excellent pack, having it optimized for 24" would just make it that much better.
I agree with Matt. The belt is thinner than some, but plenty wide and very well made.
I find that because the belt is one piece, not overly padded, and very flexible it is easy to cinch it so it conforms perfectly to my body giving even pressure all the way around. I’m a fan of the double...
OP, if you are still researching and looking for information, I got my SO Brooks a week or so ago. I haven’t had it out that much, and with nothing heavier than 45 lbs, but my initial impression is that is a fantastic pack. Fully expanded, it is huge, and looks like it can handle anything you...
If you don’t mind me butting in,..... I loaded my Brooks with day gear, 77mm spotter, tripod, etc. It weighed in at 16 lbs and compressed down very well. If day use will be the primary use the only thing I would contemplate is taking out the frame extensions and running it at 24”. IMHO it is...
I agree 100%. I just received my Chipher Brooks yesterday. Build quality is excellent, comfort is excellent and it seems to be a truly versatile platform, compressing down to virtually nothing. The load shelf however, would be more useful if more adjustable. Meat will have to be hung from the...
As this is such a short run, are you planning more in the future? I ordered a Brooks but held off on accessories until I figure out exactly what I need and what I don't. It would be nice, if at some time in the future I could add cipher accessories. Thanks.
Thank you for the reviews! Regarding the SO, can you compress the main bag material down in between the pockets to make things a little quieter? The stiffness of the X PAC material and hence the potential noise is the biggest concern I’ve had about these packs.
Keep on doin' what our doin' then!!
I got 5 years on you and don't plan on quittin' any time soon, but I do have to be way more diligent than I used to about keeping things lubed and balanced.
For really bulky loads like a full bone-in elk quarter or half a muley. I like the frame and load sling but,.....The MR NICE frame, as stiff and bombproof as it is has no lift for me, so heavy loads became very heavy, and the Kifaru cargo panel is awesome but I find that when you really cinch a...
I run/hike as well. That's partly what got me into DDP. I was having ham and IT band problems and felt I was getting out of balance. Much tighter on my whole right side than the left. The yoga thing has returned a lot of balance to my body. Not much into the weights, although I should be, but if...
Check out DDP Yoga. Touted as Yoga for people who wouldn’t be caught dead doing yoga. May come off as a bit corny, but since I’ve started doing it I’ve cut my chiropractic visits from bi monthly to about 2 a year. It does keep me more flexible. He has DVDs or an online subscriptive program...
I think I would prefer a Revo setup as well, but in the end I think I will be happy with the interior load shelf, on the Brooks. Light stuff below, meat on the shelf, and everything close to my back. I'm going to be positive and think the integrated frame will work out better. A bag big enough...
Will do. It won’t be super soon. I won’t be ordering before the end of the month and then I’m not sure what the lead time will be. As per WV Mountaineer above, research has revealed a good amount of praise for their product, but I will be going in blind as well. Fingers are crossed.
I don’t know squat about extended unsupported alpine hunting but if you feel a Unaweep 4800 is too small maybe consider the Brooks. Fully expanded, 7400 ci., but can be compressed down to as little as 1200 ci. I see one in my future and I hope the reality is as good as the intent. It seems like...
