What to use for cracking, bleeding hands in the field.

This. Best solution for dried, cracked hands I've come across. It does a great job of both moisturizing and promoting healing. As a long time rock climber and serial hand abuser Ive gone through a long list of products and nothing else comes close. I introduced Climb On to my wife a decade...

    Puffy Jacket/Pants

Donut over… Lighter and more packable for the same warmth. As others noted, they are not terribly durable, but that matters little to me.

    Puffy Jacket/Pants

Stone glacier. I have Sitka puffy top and bottom layers and would get the Grumman if I could donut over. Light is right. Plenty warm for sheep season.

    Sheep scope tripod?

That is the one. Listed weight is just over a pound but that is with an extension for the head, which I don't use.

    Fly fishing in Hawaii (Oahu)

Yes. I have family on the N shore and have spent quite a bit of time waiving my fairy wand around down there. Not a lot of fish, but giants. Lots of pressure in the areas where you can wade and fish them from shore. The flats are all on the S side of the island, some on the E side. I have...

    Alaska Sheep, 19C Working Group

Yikes. That is a pretty grim outlook. I was hoping we were at the bottom and would soon start working our way back up. Is your model something you can share? I would imagine future population modeling would be darn near impossible to do accurately given the wild range of winter weather mass...

    Sheep scope tripod?

I picked up one of these trying to lighten my kit this year. I've gone through a handful of tripods for sheep and have only really found one that I have been happy with, Velbon Ultra Luxi 2, but at 2lbs, I wanted something lighter. Additionally, after a decade of hard use, some of the joints...

    Favorite Sheep Hunting Pants

Sitka Intercept. The side zips and knee pads are pretty nice. The "weight of these pants is very versatile. Not too heavy for the early season when it is warm and not too light for the later season when it is chilly. Perfect do-it-all all pant in my opinion.

Can altitude increase have health impacts?

O2 in the blood/body is easily measured. Within a few days of arriving at 6500' anyone without underlying health problems would have an SpO2 of 98-100 just as they would at sea level.

Can altitude increase have health impacts?

No. The pressure difference between sea level and 5k in most parts of the country is less than 2psi/100mmhg. That pressure change is insignificant and not enough to have any impact on our bodies perceived availability of O2 in the short or long term. The average person may notice breathing a...

    AK Sheep, Population Observations

That is a great positive note to end on. Not as positive as hiking out with horns and meat, but great news for the future. Congrats to all that were able to harvest an AK sheep this year and for those that didn't, I hope you made some good memories in the hills and enjoyed the pursuit. +1 on...

    Louder calling for bigger bulls?

My 2 cents. Big bulls are older bulls, Older bulls are smart bulls. Smart bulls are much more concerned with energy conservation having been through the rut a handful of times as compared to younger bulls who run into about any situation they can that involves other moose. Bulls, cows...

Thoughts on this Huntin Fool moose video ethics?

After some deliberation I watched the video. That bull sure doesn't look very hurt. I still think it was a fatal shot, but based on the way he was behaving, it was likely a long, slow, bad death. Very unfortunate. I'll hold my tongue on the ethical question.

Thoughts on this Huntin Fool moose video ethics?

I've killed 3 moose with a bow and have seen both ends of the spectrum from very quick to long and protracted deaths. One died very badly. One died about like I would expect any animal to after a well made shot (double lung at 18 yards) and a 200 yard jog. The last and most recent one was the...

Thoughts on this Huntin Fool moose video ethics?

Definitely not in the brisket. I'd say 100% fatal shot based on several moose that I have or have seen shots placed very similarly on. Lungs and liver most likely. If he was quartering away, probably would have got some heart in there. The worst deaths and recoveries I've seen on moose...

    AK Sheep, Population Observations

Perhaps indirectly if there isn’t so much pressure in the general areas or guides competing with other guides and residents, we can all be encouraged to take some more time and focus on older rams. In reality, going full draw alone probably wouldn’t change the age problem we are currently...

    AK Sheep, Population Observations

Those are two separate issues for me, killing old rams vs. methods and means. I agree that some of those helo hunts aren't as "pure" or "earned" as a walk-in DIY, but for the most part, they are leaving younger sheep on the hill to grow and targeting old rams. I agree that most mature rams...
