Don't know the unit BUT I have the points to draw 1st elk, 2nd deer in 66 and am thinking I'll do that in the next 3 years. Trophy Potential in both of those seasons is lower than other seasons in the same unit but I like hunting unit with high "potential " regardless of the time of the season.
Timekiller,
You are right, I wouldn't own a muzzleloader if it wasn't for muzzy seasons but I own 2, one Ore, Wa, Id legal and one for Nv and NM.
The open sight, just lead-no jackets pretty much makes it a 200 yards weapon at best.
Personally I'm in favor of them but wonder why Ut just went...
Not an expert on unit 101-108 having only hunted it three times but unless it's the late rifle or archery, I'd concentrate on 101-103.
Just my 2 cents.
You all sound like you got a plan. After 0-35 big game draw for me and 0-25 for the wife, chukar is all I have left, but that's a lot!
I would like to hook up with someone from the Midwest for pheasants in the next few years.
Back in the late 70's/early 80's, my buddy and I would regularly...
Cooke,
Ditto brother.
My thoughts are that I routinely drive 24 hours or more for most of my elk/deer hunts so I can be in any part of Idaho in less than 8 so scouting is more doable.
I think it's a great tag. Not as high quality bulls as the other units mentioned but I have friends that hunt it, primarily rifle and they have taken at least one 330" bull, and others over 300". And they usually take the first legal bull they can.
I believe it takes 10+ PPs for a NR to draw.
My buddy has the muzzy tag for Nv 072 elk. I was hoping someone who has been archery hunting it may have some recent info.
He's been scouting it all summer but we could always use additional information.
Hunt starts Fri, the 1st.
Ditto what 5mile said.
Personally I have 5 elk points too. And 10 deer points. I didn't even get an elk point this year, or last. I figure 5 will get me the type hunt I want.
I burned 13 points for an archery hunt 10 years ago. Great hunt but that hunt now takes nearly 20 points to draw ...
Used to pack my 15x56 Swaros on every hunt with a quality tri-pod. Plenty heavy but saved me many miles of walking at times. Just couldn't accurately judge past 1-1.5 miles.
Now I use a mid-size spotter, 65mm Vortex with same tri-pod.
Invaluable in my opinion.
But I hunt different, focusing...
I prefer bone in, even on the fronts.
Temperatures at the time of the kill would dictate if I boned anything out. If it's cool the meats getting hung and I'll pack a hindquarter one trip, front and back strap on the other. My partner the same.
Once, in my young/dumb days, we tried to pack...
Our family hunted this unit 7-8 years ago. A Wyoming chip for your gps will be invaluable. We saw several mid-70s type bucks we didn't shoot cause we were unsure if we were on public or private. The unit is checkerboarded public/private. Inhunted 47 with a chip a couple years later and what...
Great advice from everyone.
I use a "lead sled" at the range. It reduces recoil but more importantly it is accurate, letting me know what the gun/load does.
As said before, shooting at game you shouldn't feel the recoil.
I've shot 4-500 rounds, at the range, outta my .338 with pretty hot...
When I was young, Danner Pronghorns were great except when I'd run a rock into the top of my foot chukar hunting.
Kenetrek Mountain Extremes are the best boot I've ever owned. Buy a pair and you'll never go back to cheaper boots, I promise.
Uninsulated for a September hunt.
One thing I think gives up hunters at a distance is when we move through timber with sunlight as a background. Our movement is magnified as not only are we moving, our shadow is moving and we are highlighted because of the sunlit background.
I use the same type system as Highcountry EXCEPT I load two horses with gear in saddle panniers and my 80+ year old Dad rides the third horse.
I pack grain. I turn my horses out at night in hobbles, one with a bell hanging from a leather strap around his neck.. as soon as they clear camp, I put...
