    Washington High Buck

“Shooting tomorrows trophy’s today” Seriously, they are damn good at killing dink bears and dink bucks. I don’t understand the appeal of traveling out of state to fill a truck bed with forkeys, but I guess whatever floats your boat.

    8x as Primary Glassing Optic?

I use the 8.5x42 Els, with a 85mm spotter. I rarely go anywhere without the spotter. I have never regretted packing it around, but I have regretted leaving it behind. This covers my bases for most of what I do, but will also pack a pair of 15's depending on the hunt.

    IOS 18 is available

I guided a hunter last week in the backcountry, no cell service for miles. He was texting his wife the entire trip without issue on the iphone. I was curious how it would do in heavy timber, since even my inreach struggles at times, it worked flawlessly for him.

    Wyoming Thorofare Elk Questions

I can't speak specifically for these outfitters, but generally is going to vary. Where I used to guide, we would sometimes send multiple guides and outfitters to the same general area depending on how the elk were moving, or send everyone in different directions. We generally would try to cover...

Anyone get their coveted tag this year

Yep. Drew the elk tag I have been applying for for years, with low odds, here in Montana. Decided to turn back the LE elk tag I drew in Colorado to make the most of it. Plan on hunting about a week of archery between guiding hunts, and taking the entire rifle season off plus the week before to...

How many days before your hunt do you scout

Scout as much as possible. I drew a tag here in Montana this year, I've been spending time in the unit at least once a week this summer learning trail systems, glassing points, etc, and am planning on scouting the entire week before season. Spend as much time as you can spare.

Over Priced Things That Shouldn't Be?

Something’s are comparable at similar prices, but quality is the driving factor. You can’t tell me that a Tikka is the same quality as a Mossberg rifle, they may be able to do similar things, but they aren’t the same. I bought some Black Ovis puffy pants because they were so much cheaper, but...

Snowpack not looking very good :(

We still have maybe 18" of patchy snow on top the divide here west of Helena. I talked to someone from the FS at a meeting last night, he said one of the snowtel sites south of Helena is tied for the lowest recorded year in history. Will be interesting to see how much rain we end up getting.

Montana (and other state) hunter orange laws out dated?

I like the idea of orange hat only requirement in all western states. I get sick of constantly shedding it, and feel like in many of the elk and deer areas I hunt it is unnecessary, yet I still follow the law. I have definitely been happy I’ve been wearing it antelope hunting though. Out on the...

    2024 Montana draw results

I got my LE elk tag with low odds. I usually am the guy who can’t draw an antelope doe tag, so pretty excited.

Guide tip on a elk hunt

I figure 10% is the norm, baseline, unless the guide sucks. If you can float it, I always recommend bringing cash to go above and beyond that if the guys is great. In my time guiding, I have received anything from $100-30% tip. The only guided hunt I have been on was fantastic, I tipped my...

Idaho Man Sentenced in Bighorn Deadhead Case

Good for you guys on the road kill law in Texas. Not sure how that applies to anything here. I sure don't read anything in the article about him killing the ram, sure seems to me, from reading the article, that he picked up a roadkill ram. Maybe there are details missing, but I guess I'm not...

Idaho Man Sentenced in Bighorn Deadhead Case

It is legal for natural death dead heads, not for roadkill. In Montana you can only salvage deer, elk, and moose I believe as roadkill. I read this as it was a roadkill sheep.

Idaho Man Sentenced in Bighorn Deadhead Case

Thoughts on this case? He absolutely screwed up, but $11,000 in fines for essentially an illegal deadhead? https://nbcmontana.com/news/local/idaho-resident-sentenced-for-trying-to-pass-off-montana-bighorn-as-roadkill?fbclid=IwAR2tmsGUdWY8syYsY30PVaVrShR52VT0dHEYiCQ13VUNGsS9YTDvUhw12VQ
