    I have used an Iridium 9505 phone, and so long as you were not in the bottom of a drainage, it worked ok, but there were a lot of repeated words, which got frustrating. With my InReach, ensuring the correct information is being sent and received is very easy.

    I used Spot and InReach side by side for almost a year to compare them, and after about the 3rd message, it was clear that Globalstar was not very confident in inspiring. Months later, the results were the same. I would not rely on Globalstar when my life is on the line.

    I have used Black Diamond, Petzl, Peak, Coast, and dozens of others. I prefer a rechargeable one, and I also carry a backup. I like about 450 lumens minimum. If you like red light, the Peak is probably the brightest one, but the strap could be better. Black Diamond Storm or Spot are good choices.

    Thank goodness for wool - got a little wet

    I'm glad you're okay; that could have been much more serious. That is why I prefer wool over synthetics. It takes longer to dry out when doing active re-warming, but I have found the combination of wool and a synthetic puffy to be damn near perfect.

    I don't want to remember to grab a different mag or ammo when I go into the woods, so I carry the same ammo in the woods as I do in town, either Speer Gold Dot or Hornady Critical Duty. Both are very well-tested for LE and are barrier-blind.
