    Drop Camp Suggestion

I'm pretty sure each drop camp has a specific location that is registered with what ever ranger station they fall under. Moving them around would require working with the park service on the outfitters part. Its not an option to just throw one in. I have a map with every outfitters drop camp...

    Drop Camp Suggestion

The biggest reason I do a drop is the packing of the meat back to the trailhead and cooler. I hunt alone, Im 57 in good shape but will not and can not pack an animal 4-8 miles back on my own. If I had a group and in my younger years-I did this and did not need the service. We just trail headed...

    Drop Camp Suggestion

There are several outfitters who only do drop camps-no guided camps. I have done well with these types of outfits. That eliminates the issues of the guided vs drop locations.

    Colorado Unit 77

I hunt 751 and 75- very close to that unit. not sure about bow seasons- but the first rifle always has pressure-but.... its easy to get away from the hunters if you walk in over a mile in rough terrain- which is all over in the area I go to. Hunted 4 times- all 1st season- killed 2 bulls 1...

    CO OTC Unit Info

I did a drop in SW Colorado last year- about 2 miles max from a trailhead- but straight uphill from one. Had a local who I met camp 1/2 mile from me. He took a horse up, I helped him load his Cow quarters on his horse and made a friend who I think I will see this years again. Saw three hunters...

    September full moon

Elk Nut-good stuff. So, do you think that Cow I passed on Oct 15, last year that was alone with a spike at 11am was in heat? Do spikes get to breed much? I killed a very nice 6-5 that I think was 4 maybe 5 years old -about 1/2 mile from that spring location the next day.. He was with...

Anyone Ever Carry Two Complete Camps??

that's a great Plan, if you kill that bull 3 hours out- a small spike near the kill site isn't a bad idea to get the meat gathered and ready- allowing for a rest between packing. Off Course you wouldn't camp right next to the kill but getting the meat to a spot away from the kill is a little...

    September full moon

I hunted a full moon last year in SW Colorado- 1st season. First day passed a fat cow (EE tag) that was with a Spike near a spring creek at 11am, second morning saw two good bulls heading into dark timber from a park- I was 700 yards away. I positioned myself and waited all day-minus a 1 hour...

narrowing down my elk hunting week

I go out every year to Colorado from Wisconsin, I always hunt the first rifle in an easy to draw area. I pick that because there is a 20 day period of no hunting from Sept 25 the Oct 15 give or take a day. I cant go in the bow season-or I would try that. I would rather hunt unpressured and...

    Colorado Unit 12 Help needed

I have hunted 23 and 24--- when you apply that's still a unit 12 tag--are you in 12 or in one of the 12 valid units that fall under unit 12? That tag allows for a pretty big area in the Float Tops and White river area, I always hunt the non motorized portions of that unit, no chain...

Flying for a DIY elk hunt?

I drive and have my truck base camp in case I need to move or need something DONT FLY UNITED!! they might overbook and throw you off the plane!! My wife and I witnessed it last week, Chicago to Duluth MN, they overbooked by 2 and at first offered $500.00 (credit) not cash- no one took it- then...

Is Montana worth the increased tag price?

I'm not sure about all the states out west in Comparison here, but I have friends who has chosen Montana to hunt because they can hunt with a bow, if they don't fill the tag they can go back with a Rifle. I suppose that is one reason for the higher cost, the other is probably based on...

    Scouting trip

In Wisconsin I scout deer in April, soon as the snow goes away. I would do the same in my elk hunting spot in May or June, but 21 hours driving is a little far. My 1st season elk hunts tell me the rutting story in the area. I hunt. I'm pretty confident I could go in Mid Sept and be in elk on...

    Scouting trip

Its a tough call whether your scouting for archery or gun. By the time you get up the hill things change. I would go with the above info on finding routes in and out, camping spots and for that manner- old camping spots from other hunters. You should avoid those spots because with my limited...

    September 2017 moon phases

I hunted with a full moon last fall first season Rifle, I'm not sure what was worse- the sustained 20MPH SW wind and 67 degree's at 10,000 feet at 2pm or the moon. Morning and nights were at 38-44. I was in SW Colorado. Elk activity was mostly night. I did catch a glimps of two bulls at daylite...

Suggestions for guided hunts Colorado, NM, Wherever I could still pull off

another one I was thinking of that runs a 90% kill in Colorado-in an easy draw or OTC is Nine Mile ranch by Meeker. I stopped and toured his location, unbelievable terrain and Elk numbers in fair chase private land hunt. Your father could easily do that hunt. JIM

    Elk Meat Pole 2016

1st season Colorado Rife- I had very little battery on my cell so I took one picture before the gutting and skinning. It was 60 degrees at 9800 ft! I had him quartered and cooled by 1AM. Going back again this fall. SW Colorado.ATTACH]
