Needing better choices for high country

When I was young, I used to do a fair amount of expedition climbing, working as a mule and logistics guy. When you say "high altitude" you probably mean around 10,000 feet. My "high altitude" culminated on the South Col toward Everest in `77. With that in mind, I'll tell you two things...

    Backcountry coffee snob.

I tried Trader Joe's instant stuff, and it's the best of the instants. I also "pad" mine with Medaglio d' Oro instant espresso though. Truly there's nothing "instant" out there worth the name "coffee" though. I'm actually beginning to miss the dogwatch coffee we had in the Navy-the stuff...

    experimenting with different freeze-dried meals

a further update on my latest experiment: crawfish etouffee, using Packit Gourmet's dehydrated vegetables. They rehydrated exactly as claimed, and went into the roux along with the rest of the ingredients. Adding the crawdad parts towards the finish, this meal turned out exactly as I expected...

    experimenting with different freeze-dried meals

Just tried the Moonshine Margarita Mix.....OUtstanding, which I find hard to believe!! tomorrow, using their dehydrated green bell pepper, celery and onion, I'm going to have a go at crawfish etouffee. I'm beginning to realize that with a little planning, I could have an absolutely decadent...

    experimenting with different freeze-dried meals

I just took a look at this, and as a guy who makes gumbo and crawfish etoufee from scratch, yeah....this is a must try! Their general grocery category is, for foodies, actually scary it has so much goodness!! I wonder if I can dehydate Andouille sausage to go in the gumbo? Laissez le bon...

    experimenting with different freeze-dried meals

The next test this morning was Packit Gourmet's West Memphis grits souffle---almost as good as the polenta with sausage! For me, it would be a toss-up on an overnight. Dottie's Chicken & Dumplings last night wasn't bad, but I felt not outstanding like their two breakfasts have been.

    experimenting with different freeze-dried meals

Hey guys, I've been trying some different pack meals-especially something different for breakfast than (G)oatmeal or the usual dehydrated eggs with whatever. This morning I tried a PackitGourmet Polenta with Sausage. And as an amateur chef, I have to say....DAMN!!! This one's always going to...

Testing the NIMROD Carbon Fiber pack *Update* Review Complete

my wife and I both have the Pinnacle setup with hydration bags. I carry my compound (yes, I do have one!), and we both love the packs! That being said however, I think this year I'll be getting a Kuiu Ultra 1800 for the lightness of the setup, the ability to easily strap an elk quarter to the...

    Going from modern to stick/recurve

Beendare...YES, YES YES, and HELL YES!!! Practice doesn't make perfect=it makes "permanent". Way WAY too many get a bow they think they can hunt with, 50-65lbs, and try to learn to shoot with it. I've been shooting for about 60 years now, and even with that, i don't start a Spring routine...

    Wood Pellet Grill

Traeger for me. Works very well, but I vacuum it out and replace the tinfoil frequently. But for all of you thinking about one, I have just one word: BACON.....A pork belly at Costco, a dose of cure, a week in the fridge, and a hickory smoke until the internal temp reaches 150 degrees. I'll...

    Looking for daypack suggestions

I have a Nimrod, been using it for a number of years now. I currently have it rigged with a Bowsnatcher so I can use trekking poles and put the bow on the back. However, I do need a day pack. I'll be switching next month to the Kuiu Ultra 1800. That way I can bag any game up, flip the pack...

    Going from modern to stick/recurve

Oh, forgot one last thing: snapshooting a trad bow is LOTS easier than trying to sight in on a flusing grouse.....

    Going from modern to stick/recurve

several things to think about: less junk to haul around, your glove or tab isn't constantly getting in the way, no sights to get knocked out of alignment, and no cams to damage. I've also never found a compound as light as my Toelke Whip. These are the pluses. On the downside, takes a LOT...

    2017 Washington Rondy

Which Pete Lake? There's one in Kittitas county, and one in Snohomish! Four and a half is still pushing it for me though.

My Weight Loss Journey to a Moose

Wonderful progress, 270Quest! BUT....I will caution you on going overboard on the running-it can be addicting, and when you're older, you'll pay dearly for it. I'm living-and limping proof. Used to run 15miles/day, a couple of marathons a month, ultramarathons when I could get the time, and...

    problem posting "thanks" or "like"

Anyone else experiencing this? When I mouse over the icon, nothing happens-the arrow doesn't change at all. Is it just me (could be, after all, I'm an old guy!)?

    call for a small person

thanks TW..I'll check them out. Too bad there's not a dealer in WA, so I'll have to order one from the source. Calls are fun to play with though, especially duck calls on a really slow, bluebird day!
