I had the same thing happen two years ago. Definitely freaked me out a little bit, but as I researched it I learned it was pretty common among hunters and hikers wearing boots for extended periods. Seems like it’s either something that people just accept, or they try different lacing techniques...
I like keeping the footprint separate from the tent so it can be repurposed for other things - tarp shelter to get out of the rain / wind, put meat on when quartering animals, etc.

2. Stake down the tent and secure things for way more wind/rain/snow than you anticipate. The preparation ahead of time beats getting up in the middle of the night to batten down the hatches because a storm rolled in.
