I am looking into getting something for backcountry communications, emergency and non-emergency. So, I was wondering what everyone uses and what you like about it. Things like personal locator beacons, satellite phones, SPOT, that sort of thing.
I am doing some research on modern day poncho liners, like the woobie and doobie. Does anyone in or around Annapolis or Maryland have one that I could see and take some pictures of?
I am trying out some dehydrated food from a vendor my friend recommended. The stuff is tasty, but when I follow the directions for preparing it the stuff comes out kind of chewy, like the food or especially the pasta/rice wasn't fully re-hydrated or something.
Is it normal for dehydrated food...
First off, I want to say that I have nothing against Kifaru or the Woobie/Doobie. I love the stuff that comes out of their fertile minds and enjoy the things I have from them.
Now that we have that out of the way, I am trying to come up with the lightest, most compact, and effective, sleep...
My daughter and I went out to look at Christmas lights over the weekend and when she mentioned her hands were cold I gave her some advice on gloves that I thought would be useful for my fellow Rokslide denizens.
You don't want your gloves to fit like a glove. The expression, "fits like a glove"...
Well friends...I finally did it. After a number of you suggested it, I signed up for the St. Baldrick's Foundation to help in their fight against childhood cancer.
That's right, on March 12th yours truly will be getting his head shaved bald as a baby's butt at Fado's Irish restaurant in...
Hello all,
I am doing an article for American Survival Guide magazine on different kinds of shelters; bivouac covers for sleeping bags, bivvy shelters, tarps, packable tents, wall tents, any kind of shelter you might use. What I am reaching out to my fellow Roksliders for is high resolution...
Moderators, if this isn't allowed please remove it, but I thought out bowhunting eastern members might be interested...
PBS Appalachian Region OYG, March 17-19, 2017

I am looking for a good chest rig/pack/pouch that I can use for carrying basic survival kit and maybe for concealed carry when hiking or backcountry camping. I know about the old Kifaru Koala and Koala Lite, and the various Hill People Gear kit bags, but does anyone else make a pouch with...
Moderators, if this request isn't allowed, please feel free to delete it.
I am putting together an article on using chest rigs, like HPGs Kit bag or Kifaru's old Koala, for concealed carry while hunting, hiking, camping, trail running, or other activities in the backcountry. I would like to...
Does anyone remember what he said the six different layers were? I can only think of four so I figured he had two kinds of insulating or two kinds of outer shells. Any help out there?
Which do you use and why?
I hear a lot about GTX boots leaking after a while, probably due to the seams loosening up through use and the water getting through. Have you had problems with GTX leaking on your boots?
Does boot wax like SnoSeal or other wax based products work well for you? How...
Doing my research on a new pair of boots for the mountains and wanted to see what my fellow Roksliders thoughts were. Please pick the brand of boot you wear and in then add a post stating the model you use and why you like it.
Thanks to all,
Larry
Hello all,
I am working on a story for an outdoor magazine on wilderness navigation and was looking for what advice or tips my fellow Roksliders would give people who were new to finding their way in the backcountry. So, if you only had a few minutes to give someone advice on how to make their...
I read a post over on Kifaruforums.Net the other day about how Patrick Smith for a long time now has been making handloads tailored to various situations (e.g., small game, big game, dangerous game) so that he can do everything he needs with one gun when he is out and about in the backcountry...
I used my Kifaru Medium/High wall oval stove in my Shangri-la 5 for the first time in October. It burns well but didn't seem to kick out the blazing heat that I hear about from these stoves. It might have been the types of wood I was burning in it, but I was wondering how much heat escapes...
Let me start this off by saying that i am looking for actual experience here, not guessing as to the reason what I describe below worked so well.
I spent a week camping and hunting in the Appalachians last month and it got down into the 30's most nights and maybe into the 20's some nights. I...
The folks over at BackCountry Navigator posted that some of their map sources, which are from government resources, are not available due to the government shutdown. Here is the list they gave and some alternate map sources that are not affected...
These map sources will be affected by the...
One of the problems/challenges I see with the threads we see everywhere about "How much should my pack weigh?" is that one is for a weekend trip and other is for a 14 day hunt in the mountains. I am a big believer that the only thing that changes in your packing list is A) how much food and fuel...
