Recent blood work with doc indicates high AST (82 vs 41 last year) and ALT (58 vs 51 last year).
Ultrasound and more bloodwork scheduled. Guessing it's the doubling of tuna (i.e., heavy metals, 10 foil packets/ wk) or possibly a supplement I'm taking.
All other bloodwork and stats were great...
I know guys that always bone out quarters, but a big ball of meat has challenges cooling and lacks structure for pack out. Less bones does mean less weight to pack. Boning also means extra time before getting it on ice.
I know guys that rarely, if ever bone out, but they will cut down the...
I'm still prone to looking at antlers first. After killing plenty of whitetails, I find myself looking for "mature" whitetails. I've defined mature for me as 4.5 or older, as they seem to be easier to field judge than younger stuff, though not always.
Anyone else prefer hunting for age class...
For those here who enjoy chasing mature western mountain whitetails, have you noticed any certain type of terrain features they tend to use over others?
Saddles/low spots between higher spots, bedded on points, south slopes when cold, are all pretty standard.
What are secondary features or...
I have a few whitetail antlers from over the years to practice on, just looking for ideas on what exactly I want. After I do a few, I plan to mount a small set of bull elk antlers once they dry.
If you have tips, hints, or hacks, let me know, please.
I realize this Rocky bull elk 4x5 is not a monster. But I was surprised it only had one set of browtines.
First i remember seeing a decent (for this area) public land bull with only 1 set of browtines.
Experiences or thoughts? Just seemed odd and thought it might make good discussion.
While researching for a tag I drew several years ago, I had an outfitter acquaintance tell me that passing an animal wasn't saying I'd rather kill a bigger one, but rather I'd prefer to eat tag soup than fill my tag with that critter. That really spoke to me.
As a youngster with limited...
I'm seriously considering a TT Scarp 1 for solo hunting SEP-NOV in MT. Looked at a ton of reviews in the hunting world as well as hiking (especially in the UK).
If I purchase, it'll be the 2022 model, solid interior, with cross poles (though depending on the hunt the cross pole may or may...
My apologies to you aged gents, I'm seeking your wisdom and thoughts. I'm not over 60, still 2 years off of 50, but I thought y'all might help me understand something.
The question is, has your perception of pain and discomfort changed as you've gotten older?
I find pain and discomfort...
I've been considering this alot over the last year. Specifically, what is fitness? Or better yet, what does it mean to be fit.
I looked up fitness in the 1828 Websters dictionary, then dictionary. com, just the first definition.
1828 Webster's
FIT'NESS, noun
1. Suitableness...
What do you do, if anything, for your mid-training season challenge between end of season last year and start (elk for me) of season this year?
I wanted something to check in with myself to see how my training was doing. The past 2 weeks I hit the best numbers on my lifts I've hit (at least...
I don't like needles or getting poked. That said, I've known folks that needed blood in trauma units or emergency surgery and know it is helpful.
I started donating this year for two reasons. One as an example to my kids, as much as I don't enjoy it, it's an easy way to help someone else...
The satellite communication world may start getting even more interesting. I don't read this as being like a sat phone but rather a sms system.

Anther thread has me considering a Tamaron lens. I tend to stick with native lenses (in my case Canon for my 7D) and that has often been a recommendation.
However, as an amateur picture taker (I take a lot of pictures and pick the best ones, photographers have a higher keep rate! LOL), the...
What lessons did you learn or re-learn this season that may/did translate to success in the future? Mine below.
1. Hunt your own hunt and write your own playbook. Don't necessarily follow others, use them as guides and author what works for you.
2. Heavy rainstorms wash out blood, true...
Kind of silly, I suppose, but as I look over new fixed blade knife designs and "wonder" steels, I wonder why so few have guards between the handle and the blade? I realize the general purpose fixed blade is surpassed in demand to the special purpose. I also realize guards are more useful for...
Bought a Sitka Jetstream a few years ago. Had to go 3x for fit and since then lost weight. Looking for a new vest.
The Jetstream was ok, but it was disappointingly loud. I usually use a vest for SEP archery, but want it fitted a little more to go under jackets later. I like DWR though...
