    What's wrong with 270 WSM?

Was there a time when people believed that energy did tell the whole story? I ask because of this rash of comments saying "energy doesn't matter" as if people need to be talked down from an all energy all the time mindset? I've been at least casually knowledgeable about firearms and reloading...

    What's wrong with 270 WSM?

I'd like to point out that you listed the two constituent ingredients of energy (mass and velocity) as factors, then said energy isn't a factor.

    What's wrong with 270 WSM?

I mean, I don't find it difficult to think in terms of energy. E=mv^2. It's that simple. If two projectiles are moving the same speed, the one with greater mass has proportionally more energy. If two projectiles have the same mass, the one with more velocity has exponentially more energy...

    What's wrong with 270 WSM?

Jay - this a bit of a cherry-picked data point. I don't want to be overly critical, because I LOVE that we're discussing data instead of just opinion and anecdotes. BUT - you chose to display the point at which the higher BC bullet is finally catches up with the higher muzzle energy bullet...

    What's wrong with 270 WSM?

BC and SD aren't what kill game. The transfer of kinetic energy into vital organs to create trauma is what kills game. BC helps you retain that energy at range, but I (like the overwhelming majority of hunters) am not shooting at ranges long enough for energy attrition to be a factor. SD...

    What's wrong with 270 WSM?

It's for the punch, not for the range. Personalities I trust (like Ron Spomer, for example) call the 6.5 marginal for elk, and I would rather have some buffer than be on a margin. Invariably, proponents of the smaller calibers will cry "energy doesn't matter - it's all about shot placement!"...

    What's wrong with 270 WSM?

Why the transition to the 7 WSM?

    What's wrong with 270 WSM?

I'm a Midwesterner aspiring to hunt out west MAYBE as often as once per year, so I doubt I'll ever have the opportunity to build true long range shooting skills. If the cartridge is effective on big game to 400 yards, then I'm the limiting factor by a comfortable margin.

    What's wrong with 270 WSM?

TLDR version - why doesn't this caliber get more love on Rokslide? Full Version - I started my quest earlier this year to find my perfect western hunting rifle, and in that search I determined that I wanted a caliber packing more punch than the 6.5's, but with a recoil lighter than a 300 Win...

WTS Divorce Sale! 6.5 creedmore plus the goodies

MAN, this is a great looking package deal! If it was a different caliber, I wouldn't be able to pass it up. Sadly, I've no need for a 6.5 CM. GLWS. I hope someone scoops it up quickly.

    Ammo advice for 350 legend

Presently, this gun seems to really like the cheap Federal PowerShok 180's, just like KenLee suggested above. To be fair, there was only one other ammo tested in a fair comparison. We burned through a few boxes of different options before we found all the scope mounting hardware was never...

    Shopping my first "nice" rifle

I've been a similar quest lately. I personally don't care much about muzzle devices, so threaded barrels weren't a concern, but I've also been searching for my ideal light-ish bang-for-buck do-all western hunter. I narrowed the calibers down to a small list: 6.5 PRC, 6.8 Western, 280 AI, 7mm...

    How close is too close?

Yeah, but there's really nothing to be done about that. If it happens, it happens, but people who can't drive down my road (I'm one of 3 property owners on that road) would have to fight through a lot of thick and rough woods to get to my hidden little plot, so I'm not terribly concerned about it.

    How close is too close?

Sure. I have city deer in my front and back yard on a regular basis. I even have a picture of a 6 point buck and my pit bull casually staring at each other 3 feet away. . . . but these aren't city deer I'll be chasing. The camp site is surrounded by 15,000 acres of USFS land, so my presence...
