It depends on the total weight you’re going to have to carry on your back based on the style of hunt. Are there horses involved, guides and packers, or a completely DIY hunt with everything you need in your backpack from the very beginning to the very end of the hunt? Packing into an area and...
Do both at the same time. Usually I will open the neck up on new brass and then size leaving a false shoulder that gives just a little resistance when chambering. Start load development with them.
I really like and trust my Hilleberg Akto, but the Durston X-Mid Pro 1 at less than half the weight is really tempting. Especially with this annoying aging thing that we have to deal with ha ha.
For me the floorless tipi is not so much a loss of comfort, but I feel it puts some limits on where to pitch it because of size and weather exposure. I’m a big fan of having the tipi/stove combo in the right place, but there’s no appeal for me to use my tipi without a stove. Especially with...
I use a 6mm dasher with 108gr eld-m for antelope. It’s a little less powerful than 243 win but works great. The antelope I shot in 2022 was 340 yds and he died quickly.
Just to add to my post. I had a 32mm and a 42mm with capped turrets, and a 32mm and 42mm with uncapped turrets and 42 with illuminated reticle. The illumination was nice for timber hunting in low light, but not necessary for sheep hunting in my opinion.
For a simple, dialing capable...
For family camping, I personally would not recommend a tipi unless weight is a major factor. I’ve used tipi’s a lot and they’re great for minimalist, lightweight, heated trips where weight is the biggest consideration. For a family with kids and dogs, I would want a big tipi. But I would...
With those two choices, I would go with the NXS 2.5-10. But I’d recommend the 32mm over the 42mm.
I used to own two of each in different configurations. I preferred the 32mm.
Goats can be tricky for sure.
My brother and I shot an old billy in 2015, but he was not typical. He had a big body, big mature head, but the horns had the typical kink at the end like a nanny. We were positive a mature billy while glassing him, but once closer and zoomed in, we could clearly...
The buck I got this year in Wyoming was about a mile pack. There were 5 of us hunting and only one truck but two had already filled their tags. So one guy, my son, stayed in town to clean and pack his meat on ice and one guy, my brother, was free to drive and drop everyone off where they...
I’ve hunted Stone sheep many times using a tipi and stove for 2 guys. The downsides are finding a big enough spot to pitch it and I’m not as confident in it if the weather really hits the fan.
The upsides are roomy and heat with a stove. Without a stove I don’t see much benefit.
I’ve also...
In my opinion, the caliber of your rifle is the least important thing on a sheep hunt in regards to killing a sheep. As already stated by others, sheep are not hard to kill and I believe the longest shot we’ve had to take on many rams killed is about 400 yds with most being way closer.
I say...
Justification looks different for everybody. For most it’s about money because sheep hunting is not accessible for most.
For me, I’m very lucky to live in B.C. Canada, so I hunt Stone sheep every year with over the counter, resident tags. There are also Dall Sheep, Cali and Rocky Bighorns...
It depends on the terrain. Some areas that we hunt Stone sheep are very rugged so it can be almost impossible to stay on top and ridge hunt from drainage to drainage. Just get cliffed out everywhere. Camping up too high just limits where you can go in terrain like this. In areas like this...
Ok that’s a great point on public access. I’m used to hunting an area with poor access so hiking is required. Thanks.
I’ll look into places to rent in Thermopolis and Worland. Thanks again.
My group got very lucky this year and drew random draw NR tags for Area 83.
I’m doing some planning and would appreciate any info on this area that anyone is willing to share. We generally like to park the truck and head out on foot for the day.
So far I’m going to apply for permission slips...
