I’ve never used it higher than a sitting position and not past 500m. It’s definitely not perfect but it’s light enough to carry on most hunts, and gives me an option if I can't lay prone over my pack.
A rubber strap might add some support for sure.
What I use is a short piece of PVC pipe split in half lengthwise, its 8 inches long and weighs about 5-6 oz. Bolt a tripod shoe to the bottom and buy a piece of pipe insulation to split in half and line the inside of it and use some type of tape to hold the insulation in place. Mine is long...
I repackage all my meals with food saver vacuum sealer and use a fareshare mug for rehydrating. My food for backpack trips is always roughly 1.4 lbs/day.

It works great but the ziploc bag with Hyperlite bag combo would save another 5oz and I may...
I went from separate units years ago to a Geovid which has been working great, but now I’m going back to separate. The reason is I got a great deal on a new NL Pure binocular and I couldn’t resist.
This NL Pure may be my forever bino and separate RF’s can come and go a lot easier and cheaper as...

Durston X-Mid 1 Solid with Durston Z-Flick poles
I bought this tent new the summer of 2023 with Durston Z-Flick poles. I’ve used this tent on two backpacking trips and it is in excellent condition.
These are excellent solo tents with double doors and vestibules. The weight of this one...
Take a felt marker and put a large “P” on it. Then use it in the middle of the night to pee in so you don’t have to crawl out of the tent.
Remember to buy a new one that’s a different color to drink from that hopefully won’t have a rubber taste.
This pic shows one 147 eld-m recovered from a caribou bull just over 400 yds, and two recovered from a mule deer buck about 80 yds.
From a 6.5CM with a 20” Proof Research CF barrel started at about 2650fps using RL16.
I’ve shot more caribou, sheep and deer with this setup with good results.
Very impressive work.
Personally, I’ve learned that I can’t have a wood stock on a rifle. Not even a laminate. I can’t handle any blemishes or damage, it drives me crazy. Scratches and damage on even expensive synthetic stocks mean nothing to me.
One time I picked up a 1970’s 444 Marlin...
Taiga Works has a good selection of down pants depending on features you want. I have the Arctic Down Pants Pro and they are excellent quality.

I’ve been yearly DIY hunting Stone sheep for a couple decades now and there’s a few small things that I find make a big difference on a long backpack trip. Assuming you have all the bigger things figured out like, packs, boots, tents, sleep gear.
- prioritize protein and fat. This keeps...
I got really turned off replaceable blade knives hunting antelope in wyoming one year. It was antelope and 1st couple days of deer season (very busy) in the unit I was hunting and almost every gut pile I came across had blades and blade wrappers laying all over the place. I know not everybody...
I’m finding that the design/ergonomics of a knife is more important to me than the steel.
For 20 years I used nothing but a Gerber GatorMate folding knife to gut, skin, debone all of mine and others animals and never thought about knives. The only other thing I used was a scalpel for caping...
I live in B.C. so I thought I should own some local knives, so I have both knives. Not much use with either one yet. I was planning on using the Mallard for birds and fish, but only skinned a coyote so far and it felt too long and awkward. Probably the wrong choice for that job.
I used the...
I have an X-Mid 1 solid and a Hilleberg Akto. I like both tents for slightly different reasons. I used the X-Mid on a sheep hunt in august and really liked it, but I find it takes longer to set up than my Akto. But that’s not just the minimum setup of 6 stakes. My X-Mid 1 definitely does...
For the past few years I’ve been struggling to find a day pack that I like for deer hunting. Typically I use a small pack and if I shoot something, I take a small load out to my truck and return with a big pack. I’ve tried many different ones over the years and although most are compact and...
We used my NuWay stove in an AO10 in sept on an 8 day caribou hunt in northern BC. Over night temps down to freezing. Used it in the mornings and evenings, and only used it overnight I think twice. Only needed one burner on a low to medium setting, and just started using a second 20lb tank on...
At 1.4 lbs a day currently, I really like the performance I get out of my plan for 2 week hunts. But if I can get that to 1 lb or less with no loss in performance, then I’m interested.
It’s funny how many years it took before I finally figured out how to feed myself in the mountains without...
Here’s my food list for sheep hunts, maybe it will help. I add a lot of fat using coconut milk powder, and protein using freeze dried meat or protein powder. I’m not sure on total daily calories, but I know with this menu I eat 3 times per day and I don’t get overly hungry and even though I do...
