    new to elk hunting

60lbs is plenty to kill elk, resist the urge to crank up your bow just because you're planning an elk hunt. I see too many guys at the range struggling with their bow under perfect conditions - if drawing at the range in a tshirt in August is tough, how are you gonna do it smoothly in September...

First ever western hunt- help (idaho)

That's totally fair, and I'll defer to your experience on the ground since I haven't hunted that area. I bring my spotter with me on most hunts in eastern Oregon and its usefulness totally varies with the area. In some places, it's invaluable for reaching up a long canyon or across a major...

First ever western hunt- help (idaho)

No, it won't. Unless you really want to evaluate individual bucks or are familiar enough with the area to know for sure it will help, it isn't going to change your hunt at all. At most, get a tripod mount for your binos, or at least sit down and brace them on a trekking pole while you're...

    Late season Cow hunt

Since this turned into a water bottle thread, I'll throw in my 2 cents. If you're using nalgenes, the white ones are better than the colored/translucent ones. The plastic handles cold better and is much less prone to cracking from impact when cold. If you're putting them vertically in your...

If you think being a “thoughtful” hunter will prevent this in the US, think again...

Since Meateater was mentioned earlier, I think Rinella's done a great job (along with others like Randy Newberg, and maybe Hank Shaw) of what you're describing. Showing the hunting experience outside of the kill itself in a way that nonhunters find interesting and relatable. If you broke down...

If you think being a “thoughtful” hunter will prevent this in the US, think again...

I live around and work with lots of non-hunters, and if they're genuinely interested in having a conversation, I explain it this way. From their perspective, pretty much all they see of hunting is the "grip and grin" pics. And I get it, that can be a little jarring. They see it and it represents...

    USPS Woes

This is my experience as well. I shipped an insulated box of frozen meat with a guaranteed delivery date, and it arrived a day late (still frozen solid btw), so I looked for the refund they said I was owed. Got the absolute run-around from the local 1-employee branch where I dropped it off - not...

    Oregon Travel Management Areas

This one right here. I've come across a lot of illegal firewood cutting, especially up on the Olympic peninsula. Some of it is really brazen, dropping whole mature trees and bucking them up to roll or haul out. I report the locations to the USFS but it's tough to do much after the fact. Aside...

    anyone do flatiron steaks (elk)?

Favorite cut. I save backstrap for gifts and guests, but the flatiron gets guarded jealously. Once you fillet out the big tendon in the middle, I often fillet each of those again so they're nice and thin. Salt and pepper, then sear like hell in a cast iron with butter or oil. Maybe 2 min a side...

    Womens Hunting Packs?

Mystery ranch makes a few women-specific packs as well, although the smallest sizes have been out of stock for awhile. Last time I called they said they were expecting more production Nov/Dec this year. Trying to find a good elk pack for my 5'1" wife, and frame size is a major issue. It's hard...

How far will logging activity push elk?

We've taken elk within 1/4-1/2mi of active thinning operations. IME they don't necessarily move all that far if they have decent cover and feed adjacent to the activity. I'd proceed with your plan B, evaluate the area, and then move on if you don't find anything.

    Ochoco Unit 37: Archery Elk - 2020

100% about too many roads in Oregon. Not saying everything should be pure wilderness backpacking only, but so many places I go have a road on the ridge, a road in the valley, and a road or two on the slope somewhere. I wouldn't mind at all if we decommissioned or gated more spur roads. I've...

Struggling to find my archery path...

I'd like to switch back someday as well, but for now, the deciding question is are you okay with passing up opportunities where a compound would've made the shot? If you have an elk broadside at 40 yards, but your recurve limit is 20, can you still go home happy or will you regret your decision...

    Barnes ttsx on Colorado cow

I've got three elk down with the 150gr TTSX out of a 30-06. Two were broadside double-lung and crashed within 25 yards, exit wound was just like OP described. One was quartering toward and I hit a little back, only took out one lung and liver, found the bullet lodged against the top of the...

Broadheads for shooting elk with 60# DW?

60# and your current setup is plenty but I would switch to a fixed blade for elk. I've taken deer with mechanicals and have nothing against them generally, but I don't know of many elk being taken with them. I'd opt for better penetration and less energy lost opening them up.

    Late roosevelt archery

Nov. 28 - Dec 13, it coincides with part of the late blacktail season. It's a controlled tag but not a hard draw at all. Check pg 52 of the 2020 regulations, the archery controlled 200 series hunts. There's a handful of controlled archery tags that are all valid for both the general archery elk...

    Late roosevelt archery

Gotcha. I'm an ok caller at best, so nailing a spike bugle in the moment when they're busting away probably isn't happening. I'll think about bringing the tube to project cow calls better though.

    Late roosevelt archery

That's all great to hear, thanks for the advice. Spot and ambush / get ahead of them sounds like the best plan for this tag, especially if they calm down after rifle season and feed in the open during daylight longer. I'll definitely cow call in timber to try to get a response, hadn't...

What Broadhead Did You Use In 2020?

100 grain Kudu out of a 50# bow did the job for my wife's cow elk. Broadside, penetrated to the fletching, elk went about 75 yards and crashed.

    Late roosevelt archery

Helped my wife fill her first archery tag in September but couldn't manage to fill my own, so I've got a late archery cow hunt coming up on the Oregon coast. It's extremely low success rates and the elk will be pretty thoroughly spooked after 3 months of hunting pressure, but I'm still looking...
